A friend of mine had a G5 powermac... No applecare. At 14 months from purchase the logic board blew.. It was going to cost him something like AU$1600 to fix, ended up selling it for scrap.

I bought applecare for my macbook.

EDIT: Apples response to my friend: "Well peter, if you had have bought applecare we wouldn't be having this problem"

$90 for an extended total of 4 years Appleare is not what I was referring to in my post but the stock care package offered by Apple's retail. The latter is TWO extended years for $250.

Your narcissistic additude and personal bashing approach only adds to your already questionable character. No one cares about your American express deal. Show me a non promotional retail applecare package for $90 and then talk. Idiot.

Firstly, the word is attitude.

Personal bashing? Of course I was offended by your initial post. If you have to preface your thought with "I don't mean to offend anybody" then you either probably shouldn't complete your thought or else be ready to receive some rather acidic responses.

Your offering to this thread suggested that those who choose to purchase AppleCare are merely following their "sheep mentality" and thus incapable of making sound, informed decisions. That was a ridiculous generalization and definitely deserving of retort.

That was what I was addressing.

Also, my situation was in no way special. This was not a promotional AppleCare package but a regular consumer product. I was illustrating a scenario that is available to anyone. I'm sure there are other opportunities as well to structure these things to the consumer's advantage. My example was merely meant to provide some sort of motivation for people to seek out information prior to their purchase of AppleCare.

That said, you deserve no more attention.

Enough of this derail. As always, to those who are unsure, do your research before any major purchase and remember that you have a full year to purchase AppleCare if you need it. No need to make a quick decision at the point of sale on the day of your computer purchase.

Okay, so where do I get the $90 Applecare then?

Is it possible to buy Applecare when your 1 year warranty is about to expire, so you would have an extra 3 years or warranty, or does it not work that way? Does that mean that you have to buy Applecare when you buy the hardware?

from the time you buy your computer, you have a full year in which to buy the Applecare warranty extension.........but be aware that you are buying a 2 year extension, NOT a 3 year extension.....what you end up with is the 1 year standard warranty plus 2 more years under Applecare for a total of 3 years from the date you bought your computer

normally i hate "protection plans of any kind. on alot of things, i feel they are a ripoff. however, on really expensive/fragile items, its worth it. my only gripe with applecare is no option for accidental damage protection. yes, i know people just break their item sometimes to get a new one, but plenty of other places still have it.

most of the parts in the computer are not made by Apple, simply designed by them and outsourced. They buy their drives, ram, motherboards, screens from other companies that make them and assemble have them assembled by someone else still. Things like optical drives and hard drives and screens and motherboards can fail. The cost of replacing/repairing those items in a notebook is not cheap. Therefore CYA and get Applecare. It's just good sense. If nothing at all goes wrong, then at least you had better peace of mind.

NEVER BUY APPLECARE!!

It's just insurance. The way insurance companies make money by paying out less than they take in. Call it the law of averages. Apple makes money on Applecare. Lots of money.

You're only buying 2 more years coverage. Why not just put the purchase on your Visa or American Express that extends the manufacturer's warranty for FREE? Sure, it's a hassle to claim, but that should be an unlikely event.

I've been a Mac user for over a decade, and I have never once needed Applecare.

I once bought warranty for an Averatec laptop and through 3 years the only thing I needed replacement was the dvd drive. $40 on eBay, but the warranty cost me $400 from Bestbuy... the computer wasn't even worth $400 by then...
