This isn't true. When you deactivate the data plan you simply have no internet when not around WiFi. You need to tell the CSR to put you on the pay as you go plan to pay per KB.

You may want to double check that. The data plans allow you to use the network for a set price. Any other use is charged as per use. This is similar to not having a text messaging plan. Any texts you send or receive are charged per use. I didnt have a data plan on one of my previous phones with internet capabilities. I used it and ended up running up a data usage bill. Things may have changed since then but I doubt it.

no, you don't. somebody already corrected you on this, let it go.

With the iPhone it's different then, don't know why. I keep my data plan off most of the time since I don't use it unless I'm on a trip, and all that happens is the "E" disappears. The CSR will allow you to turn on pay-as-you-go, if you request it, but I never did.

Soooo I'm confused...you CAN just request that the data plan be turned off (or switched to pay as you go) to avoid the $30, and then you CAN make sure the iPhone isn't trying to use it?

supposedly, (there's a thread around here somewhere from the guy that did it) you can turn off the data plan, but it depends on which rep you talk to. if you do that, you don't have to worry about pay as you go since that needs to be turned on in order to work.

I do think you could get away with most things without data plans, but I would think you wouldn't want to use Visual Voicemail, as if I remember from iPhone 2g, it was not done through wifi, it was done through edge / 3g / data services .... other than that I don't see in most cases where data is required if you are in a wifi location all the time (which I personally don't see myself.) i don't know how you would disable the phone from using edge at all though, I guess have them block edge data stuff to the phone if that's possible. *shrug*

Hmm did some searching.. maybe you don't need data to get visual voicemail.. Mixed reports!

Correct. And to clarify I have a 2G iPhone. In order to drop the data plan on the 3G you need to get lucky and get a CSR that doesn't know better. It would seem that they just block EDGE when you cancel, since you just lose Internet. Also, with the 2G, you lose visual voicemail (regular is activated) and you lose SMS.
