Is there a difference between jail breaking and unlocking the phone? And if so what are the diffrences between the two?

There is a difference and unlocking means to use the iPhone on a different carrier whereas with jailbreaking, you can still use AT&T. I think though that you have to jailbreak to unlock but I'm not entirely certain since I've never had the desire to use my iPhone with a different carrier.

thank you very much for the fast responce, I'm the same as you. I don't have the desire to use a separate carrier just want the ability to do what I want with the phone.

As for my earlier questions and responces I got, thank you also. You guys have been very helpful and I think I'm convinced that jailbreaking my phone is very bennificial for what I want to do and comes with very little risk if any at all. And if somthing for any reason does happen, it's completely reversable.

Last but not least, and recommendations on a web page or program to break the 3gs? Most people on this site have the 2g or 3g

Which uses the same program as the 3GS. Download Pwnage Tool for the Mac, or redsn0w for Mac or PC. :)
hey quick question - if i jailbreak today and say, next week, i buy three apps from the app store and 5 songs. are all the songs that i buy when its jailbroken lost when its restored?
No, why would they? :) They should be on your machine anyway. If you bought them on your device, then just use the "Transfer purchases" option in iTunes.

No.

Jailbreaking breaks your warranty.

If you damage your iPhone, Apple won’t fix it. Some of my friends have damaged their jailed iPhones and gotten full replacements! This is not a possibility for someone with a jailbroken iPhone. Apple will just say, “The reason it’s not working is because you hacked it.” Hacking your iPhone is not sanctioned by Apple, so whatever you do is at your own risk.

There’s always a possibility of something bad happening.

Even Zibri says, “ZiPhone has worked reliably for many iPhone users, but occasionally things do go wrong.” If this happens, you could be left with a iPhone that is unable to restore. This happens because something in your iPhone so so corrupt that either iTunes cannot read your it or pressing restore just won’t work. Also, you have to be really careful when new firmware comes out. If you upgrade… It’s dead.

The apps are not that great.

A majority of the iPhone apps on installer are absolute pointless. Also, people make a lot of apps just to prove the point that it is possible, but actually do nothing helpful for the user. I have two examples. I downloaded this one apps called cowbell… You tap on it and it makes a cowbell noise, this is self explanatory. There is also an app that lets your record videos, but only 5 seconds long. Then, the only way to get it onto your computer it to SSH into your iPhone. Trust me there are a lot more apps that do nothing helpful than apps that cool or help you get things done.

Your iPhone works fine as it is.

You love your iPhone and it already does everything you want it to. You just have to live for 4 months, knowing it can do so much more. It’s a great iPod, a great phone and a great internet communicator. Why should you jeopardize that?

The iPhone SDK looks amazing, and it’s coming in 4 months.

We already saw the power of what companies could do in 2 weeks with the SDK. There is nothing like those apps in installer. No Touch Fighter, no Super Mokey Ball, no Spore. Come June, you will have all of that. It’s worth the wait.

Does jailbreaking / running redsn0w allow you to swap out the sim if you go overseas? or is that a separate process?

redsn0w is simply one of the programs used to jailbreak, not unlock. ultrasn0w is the name of the program that unlocks.

as far jailbreaking, all it really requires is ONE good reason. If you're on a fence, then you shouldn't do it. Funny how I held back from jailbreaking when I had the first generation iPhone because I paid $400 bucks for the damn thing, but as soon as JB became available for 3GS, I did it within 10 minutes of the release.

I really don't need a list of reasons, and I enjoy having full control over my phone, especially the fact that it is the most expensive phone I ever bought.

As for food for thoughts, iMobileCinema enables iPhone to watch some flash videos from MegaVideos, and it was great to be on a road trip and streaming Simpsons.

Ive been looking at the dev team's updates and according to them, the newest version of redsn0w that they have out doesn't work for jail breaking the 3gs.... could anyone give me a link for the program they used to unlock their 3gs cuz till now im unable to find one that is confirmed to work correctly. please :)

Was this posted from somewhere else in the space-time continuum?

Look harder, latest version DOES work with the 3GS, typing on a jailbroken one now. Also, see the previous post in this thread before yours. :)

No, you will still need Itunes....i think you are able to backup your apps and stuff on 2 itunes...im not sure though.

i choose to Jailbreak mainly for apps...i didnt want to be stuck with apps only from the app store.

However, winterboard and backgrounder ate through my battery REALLY quickly...so i uninstalled both and getting MUCH MUCH more battery life.

No Apple locks iPhone to first computer with iTunes on it when you initialise your iPhone thé vert first Time - so when after a week i plugged m'y iPhone to my other computer iTunes wiped out all m'y purchased apps without warning!!!?
This is totally insane From Apple :(

Ohh, wow i didnt know that...you learn something new everyday =)

Only if you have "automatically sync" turned on...

No, i had manual sync turned on, iTunes erased my purchased apps ... actually i havé overlooked message telling me i got some apps that were purchased on another computer ... that is why....
I,ve reinstalled the errased apps back from the original computer but LOST all docs that were created in Quickoffice suite :(

I've been using Macs since Apple Classic, but lately Apple is becoming mainstream and taking over the Microshaft approach?

is there a workaround if I jailbreak and/Or unlock?

Will i be Still locked to One iTunes-Apple Store-computer account ?

Yes. If you jailbreak you will still need iTunes. Infact, I think all iPhone owners need iTunes.
