the ipad didn't become really useful for me as more than an ereader until i started using an external keyboard (with the incase origami case too). some people don't like that and prefer to go with a full computer. that's cool. but, the ipad is less expensive than a macbook air, same weight with the keyboard, has twice the battery life, lets you do handwritten notes, and lets you read, so i pretty much never take the computer out of the house anymore.

it also has 4 times less storage and a lower resolution display.

I'm not a current iPad user (that will change soon) but own an '07 15" mbp, '11 13" mba and iP4S. When I swapped my daily ride from the mbp to the mba, I found that I was actually bringing it with me in cases where I had stopped bringing the pro because it was just too much to carry (factored in with all the other things I have to carry for work).

My business partners both use their iPad 2's both at the office and traveling and I can see how it would be even that much easier to travel with. The iP4S is great for doing lots of things, but I can't give presentations with it, show photos on it, or really use it for proposals (even though I do have iWork on it and have proposals loaded on it). I do love the size of the mba - it's light enough to carry around or pass around and the screen size is just that much bigger than the iPad too. Also, the separate keyboard of the air would be hard to give up if I was thinking of document or proposal creation while traveling.

I'll find out shortly - if the iPad 3 is the improvement it seems it might be, I'll get one.

I maintain that if you have a decent lightweight laptop that a tablet is somewhat redundant.

But if you're like me with a BlackBerry provided through work so I can't justify spending money on a second cell (iPhone), a 3 year old laptop with a shot battery (also provided through work), and a DIY full tower gaming PC at home then an iPad is great for casual use lounging around the house.

It is tough to determine just depends on your situation.

I have all 3 and since getting my iPad I really never use my mbp. If I need to do something that requires heavy computing I just use my desktop otherwise I use my iPad for everything.

If your mbp is your only computer then I think you will find use for your iPad 3.

I do. I mostly use it for email, reading, web browsing, and games though.

This is what I'm kind of afraid of. I'd love for my iPad to be my only portable device, but the way the software is right now, sometimes I do need my MacBook Air around. So for now, I'll have both. If it evolves enough to where I can really have the iPad replace everything I do on my Air, then great!

I've got all 3

I've got a MBA (2008 version), Iphone, and IP1 - I use all three. I use the IP1 for business regularly -
1. Reading longer articles or pdfs that people send me. I just don't like reading long articles on a computer screen. Much easier to read and to highlight on an IP as well

2. Meetings. I refuse to a. take notes on paper as I loose the notepad and b. print out a bunch of docs just so I can have them at a meeting only to through away an hour later.

3. Ad hoc second screen. There's an app that turns your IP into a second screen. Very handy when I have my work laptop out of the office.

4. Business travel. I don't have to take a bunch of books and magazines anymore. Plus, I really don't like using computer for personal stuff. So the IP is the perfect business companion. (OK - not perfect but very nice).

Tons of other uses as well, but I thought I'd highlight business uses to get over the "Ipad is just an expensive toy". It is an expensive toy - but so much more! If you travel a lot for work, get one - no questions asked.
