I dropped a water bottle on my 1st Gen. 12.9” iPad Pro, and now the screen is toast. The glass is NOT cracked, but there are a multitude of colourful flickering lines across the screen, horizontally and vertically.

I checked with an Apple certified repair shop, and they will only replace the iPad Pro, but there are OEM repair shops in town. The reason why I don‘t just go ahead and replace the iPad is that it works for me, I have a keyboard and lightning dongles that I would have to replace if I get a new iPad Pro.

It probably wouldn’t be to tricky doing it myself, but alas, I may screw something up, and then I am left stranded.

So, the OEM screen the repair shop will replace the screen assembly with, are they worth it? Will I notice a difference? The screen will come with a lifetime warranty, so I guess it can’t be all bad...

I was under the impression that my pen for instance will not work with the new ones, and that the interface is now USB-C...

Apple Pencil Gen 1 does not work with IPP 3rd gen.

I personally wouldn't replace it myself for the reasons you have stated.

Using a 3rd party vendor to replace the screen will save you money as if went down the Apple route, you might as well buy a brand new iPad. Would look at the repairers reviews before seeing if the cost is worth it.

BTW you can get some great Refurnished IPP deals on Apple website.

An Apple replacement would be a refurb 1st Gen 12.9”, so your accessories would still work. But that costs about £600 and you may be better off trying the screen repair or buying a refurb from the online store. It may work out cheaper to do it that way than paying the out of warranty fee.

If you wanted a brand new 12.9” iPad then yes, that would be a 3rd gen and it uses a different pencil and accessories.

An official replacement is always like to like unless they don’t have any in stock or in the manufacturing line anymore.

You're better off getting a newer 12.9 inch iPad Pro. You can find very good deals on the 2nd generation. It's usually under $500.
