I tried to search for this question with no luck.
Wondering what others do when they get a promo code for an app and don't think it so great?
Do you write an honest review in the forum but not at iTunes?
Do you write an honest review at iTunes?
Do you not write anything even though the author has ask you to in exchange for his/her app?
I'm not sure what to do and am interested in what others think.

I round the rating up, give it at least three stars (if it is functional but not great), point out some good points, and say it has the potential to be good software if certain points were made easier/better/etc...

If the developer gave you the code, email them your feedback. (1) it might make the app better (2) they may have the missing features in the pipeline and (3) maybe you're not using it correctly.

In fact, I wish all users would contact developers when they have questions/issues. You will find you might get better support for that $0.99 app than you would for a $99 shrinkwrapped software program. I believe that's the case with my apps.

If only we could answer to reviews or contact reviewers to help them when it's their fault not an app fault....

Right. Like eBay offers a chance to respond to a review, I believe. I wrote about this in my free ebook, at http://www.AppStoreSuccess.com. For example, early on, new iPhone users would complain because they couldn't hear the sounds in 100sounds. They didn't know the phone had a MUTE switch, and that they had set it.
