To many horror stories about iMac screens !

Gonna go for 15" macBook pro or mac mini

After all of these replies with only one negative? For the record I've bought 5 iMacs over the years, most recently a 27", and all the displays were fine. The only Mac I ever had problems with was a mini which came with bad audio. So I'd likely be far more afraid to buy a mini!

The worse thing about iMacs is probably dust getting behind the glass panel. It is inevitable, only a matter of time. And removing the panel to attempt to clean it... only makes it worse. Plus, in due time, dust will settle inside again. This is one serious design flaw that really detracts from the premium feel of these products. Ugh.

I've seen posts like this b4 and am amazed. We own 4 iMacs and not one has a dust issue. Three have been opened to replace hard drives and still no dust so I don't understand it at all.

Cheers,

I'm pretty sure you had your mind made up when you made this thread.

I've had 3 iMacs and the screens on all of them were literally breathtaking.

1. The chances of getting a bad screen are very low. People who have problems with their apple products come here to talk about them, people who don't have problems (the vast majority) don't make threads about the absence of an issue.

2. It's covered under warranty. If you get a bad screen, send it back. Nuff said.

There's nothing wrong with a mini or a MBP, but you shouldn't be dissuaded from buying an iMac because of a handful of problems reported on the internet. I can promise you that you won't regret it.

The silent majority are too busy having a blast with their iMacs to go to forums and complain :).

Going by the many threads in this forum, not just replies in this thread.

Coming to a help forum what did you expect to find? You're thought pattern seems to be like someone that would drop into a hospital expecting to see people that are well and happy. Obviously it's not realistic. Frankly I could care less if you bought any Apple products, however to come here or any help forum expecting to find happy owners is unrealistic. There are millions and millions of totally satisfied users that don't say a word, why because they have no reason to . They're too busy enjoying their computers.

Actually, they're pretty high. I returned 4 iMacs in 2009 and just tried again and returned one this week. While they were processing my return at the Apple store, I checked a test target web link on ALL the iMacs in the store. Every 21.5" and 27" iMac had the yellowing screen problem.

I then checked the 27" standalone display and several different laptops - ALL WERE GOOD!

So, the iMac screen is not reliable and you should indeed be scared to buy an iMac.

There are some reports of people returning many iMacs to get a good one. But the odds of that happening have to be extremely small. Any returned Mac must be refurbished and cannot be sold as new. It's a major drain on profits. Ignoring that people with problems are most likely to post, this thread would imply that 10% of customers have a problem and that 10% of the units are therefore bad. But if that were their return rate they would certainly shut down production!

I'd say that people like Jamooche either have standards that are much higher than average (in which case they probably would be better served with a Mac Pro and a professional grade monitor) or are very unlucky. If there is a 10% failure rate, then returning 5 consecutive iMacs and finding all those in a store (lets say five more) defective would be one chance in 10,000,000,000. To have a 50:50 chance of getting 10 defective monitors in a row would require that 93% of iMacs had bad displays. Now indeed to a critical eye this would be the case -- the design of the monitor with just "white" LEDs for backlights and temperature gradients will keep them from being acceptable, but if most people found them unacceptable then they would have to cancel the product line! The bottom line is that most people find them more than acceptable.

I was super happy with the screen. But with the hard drive recall, I am freaked out. I am worried about dust. I don't think I would go iMac again. For laptop, no problem -> Apple + AppleCare and sell it before the AppleCare is up. For desktop, I wouldn't go all-in-one again.

OP, I suggest you don't get an iMac, you seem to be worrying about all the trivial things, making it really seem like you don't need one. On that aspect I would say yes get a mini.

Who cares what everyone else says? Buy the mac, and by god do not go looking for these "defects." You will become paranoid and think there is something there but in reality nothing is wrong with your display. I purchased a new 27", I love it. There is nothing wrong with my machine. Stop trying to get advice from a help forum where the people who have all these problems frequently look.

Check out your iMacs at your local Best Buy or Apple Store. Ask your friends, your neighbors. A help forum is not the place. ;)

I recently bought a 2.5 ghz 500 gb i5 iMac. Before that I have had:

Starting with a Apple 2, Laser 128, Mac plus, Mac plus 68030, Mac 610, mac 650, blueberry iMac, Wallstreet Power book, Powerbook 800, Macbook Pro, and my wife has a iPad2.

Nothing has ever been wrong with any of these machines, bought either new or used.

Don't worry.

Not sure what the deal is but the screen on this 27" iMac makes people go out of their minds. It's gorgeous.

Ditto on this.
I purchased mine in may after refresh and this thing is awesome. Fast, quiet and the screen is absolutely stunning.
So far no complaints.

I really never had any issues with my iMac screen, and if I will there's no problem to return it and get a new one.

I wouldn't say the screen is a trivial thing...it's the most important part isn't it?

The 2 main issues seem to be yellow tint / dead pixels on screen and hard drive 'rumble'.

I can only go on what people say on here and while it's true when people say only people who aren't happy post while those who are happy don't, it doesn't look good when you look on this forum.

I will get an iMac and knowing my luck it while have a issue, but I really hope not! I just fear falling into a long return cycle like I have read some people on here have (someone went through 8?! In the yellow tint thread).

Apple products are great but some times their quality control leaves a lot to be desired.

Maybe it is you who has the problem and not all the iMacs.

I suggest you do like he did and check a bunch of 27" iMacs in the store with the screen test (& turned down to 50% brightness, which is how you'd be using it at home) before coming to that conclusion....

As I mentioned previously, someone who is very particular about display may not like the iMac. If indeed someone gets 8 unacceptable (to them) displays in a row, that implies either their standards are too high for the product or they are having incredibly bad luck (like one chance in a billion). Otherwise the iMacs would be so bad Apple wouldn't be able to sell any, and that is certainly not the case.

So here's a suggestion -- go to an Apple store and look at the iMacs. If they all look bad to you, then your tastes are such that you shouldn't buy one. But if they all look fine then go ahead and order since it is very unlikely you will have a problem.

Just saw a parallel post to mine with the same suggestion.

Couldn't agree more, just go to the AppleStore and play with them, that is what I did and I'm loving my base model 2011 imac

OP you have to realize that many many people get normal iMacs but never post about it. however, people who get defective products will post about them so it ends up making the product defect rate appear much higher than it is. If the mini is good enough for you, get it by all means simply add on a decent monitor.
