you do not fear that when you drop the phone, those cases wont be enough? How do you deal with that fear? Just YOLO?

No hate. But just curious. I dropped my iPhone 4 before with a leather case, and the screen cracked in many places. Since then I am hesitant to really use those fancy but not too protective cases. I really wanna get a leather case again but just hesitant cuz I go to the gym and run a lot. So I just get Otterbox Symmetry, Pursuit and now Defender.

I do not drop my phone a lot but you know, accidents happen.

I probably dropped my iPhone X with Apple leather case at least 10-15 times in the 3 years I owned it, about half of those times being on hard surfaces, including a few concrete drops. Zero damage to phone. Not a scratch on it when I traded it in, and I didn’t even have a screen protector. I find thin cases to have enough protection. I never drop my phone from higher than about 4 ft, and I’m not really sure why people think they need a case rated for 10, 20, or 50 ft drops lol... are you afraid you’re going to drop your phone off the top of a building? I think you just got really unlucky with your iPhone 4 and a rock or something hit the screen before the sides of the case, which could happen with any case.

Yeah AppleCare is good peace of mind. I’m clumsier than two drunk sorority girls so I need to have some kind of case but I find the Apple Leather case or a clear case provided everyday protection, or at least enough protection so I’m not running to Apple to get the phone fixed every week. Plus, the phone just feels so good in the leather case, for me.

I think since my very first mobile phone I’ve only dropped one twice. These things are worth £1k so I take care not to drop it 😄

Apple Care paid monthly. But never had a cracked screen, or a damaged phone. Only ever a scuffed case once.

If you look after something, it won’t get damaged. Fact.

I use thin cases specifically so I don't drop my phone. I find the added grip helps. Yesterday my dog jumped on me while I was texting and nearly knocked the phone out of my hands.. had it been naked (the phone, not the dog)... would have dropped it for sure.

When I have dropped my phones in the past, it is usually off the couch or somewhere low... so I've been quite lucky in that regard.

I’ve got AppleCare+ for damage. Normally doesn’t use cases or drop my phones. I do have for my 12Pro the Apple silicone case. It is off the phone more than it’s on it, however

I either must be lucky or just extremely careful with my devices but have had the iP 3GS, iP4, iP5, iP6 Plus, iP7, iP XS and now iP12 Pro and not once have I scratched/smashed a screen and have never majorly dropped my phone, only from say sofa height.

Only ever used glass ESR screen protectors and cheap ESR clear cases.

This time however, I treated myself to apples official cases both leather and silicon, originally went with the Belkin screen protector but swiftly switched it out for the ESR one which is far better IMO and cheaper.

I just think to myself, the phone is £1000 so look at after it as you would £1000 in cash, would you just lay £1000 in cash down anywhere... or leave it half sticking out of your back pocket or bag? I personally would never do that so the same applies with my phone lol.

Always keep my phone in my front pocket with nothing else, and always think about where I am putting it down so no one can sit on it, knock it on the floor etc... and I always handle it with a decent grip too.

I've never purchased AppleCare for any of my Apple products, and have not been sorry once (knock on wood). I've had to replace a screen once in 20 years, replaced the camera recently for my iPhone Xs Max. That's it. Self-insured, in other words.

Not to be argumentative but the point about the phone being $1000 or whatever - how often would the entire phone need to be replaced? Screen replacement costs a fraction of that, and even with AppleCare its not free (I believe).

Just my point of view. If you're worried about it, and AppleCare gives you peace of mind, then by all means purchase it.

haha i used to think and feel the same way as you. ive had iphones since the 3gs and my go-to is always rhinoshields (ive literally dropped my pervious phone in a rhinoshield probably 6,785 times on gravel and concrete and had NO DAMAGE to the phone). i purchased an apple silicone and leather case for my new iphone 12 pro with the intention of returning both while i wait for my rhinoshield, but i fell in love despite the ugly price. anyways, i returned the leather and the rhinoshield and kept the silicone. im willing to risk any potential damage from this less protective case simply because of how GREAT it looks and feels holding this phone with the case on. plus the screen on the ip12 is apparently stronger anyways so im not too worried about damage.

The Apple leather case protected my iPhone 7 sufficiently for 4 years. Certainly dropped it a few times over the years. I’d be a little more worried/cautious with those Totalee or Peel type super thin cases. I guess the 7 didn’t have a glass back, but the leather was really quite shock absorbent IMO.

same. I had a leather case on my X since release day. dropped it many times on tile but a few on pavement. the case scratched up a bit but the phone was mint when I traded it in last week for the 12 Pro. no screen protector on it either.

It’s a great case. Did you get the rustic brown?
Glad to hear that! Sounds like you like yours. Which color? I originally was between the natural and rustic brown, but then ended up pulling the trigger on the black one. I liked the sleek look and I have their black AirPods Pro case so the must-match bug bit me.

Mine is the natural. And while it didn’t patina the way I would have liked it during the first month, this second month it’s starting to come out pretty nice.

I have always used apple leather cases and a glass screen protector. I have cracked many screen protectors but never my phones screen. Now that the apple cases have full coverage on all sides including the bottom I am very happy. Sure the cases take a beating if dropped on concrete but thats its job. BTW I dont have apple care, never have, glad I have saved all that money over the years.

Just get a decent rated case and screen protector. Don’t bother with AppleCare, I see it as a ripoff when if the worst should happen you’re likely already covered if you have home contents insurance.

I get 20% off apple care plus and just pay monthly, I do it mainly as it’s my business phone so it’s easy/fast to get a replacement as I live 6 hours from a apple store.
I can do insurance but takes longer and there is a excess to pay too, and they put your policy up every time you claim.
Have made good use of both ways with my kids phones, a good case and screen protector won’t stop a dumbbell in a gym haha. 17 year old girl too lol.
