About those 52x burn speeds. I sit actually possible to do that? I mean it would have to be a really fast cable for starts and I'm not sure if FireWire would cut it. Anyway, I don't know what I'm talking about, acn anyone tell me how fast they have burned cds and not had misburns?

Anyway, I can verify the fix. You must delete all vestiges of Toast from your computer; reinstall Toast 5.0 (booting into OS9) and immediately booting back into OSX and running the new 5.2 updater. THEN you can enter the registration info and it works beautifully now.

This should NOT be necessary, of course. Either this is a bogus final release or Roxio has screwed up with the updater.

Cheers!

That's good to hear. I'll be waiting for a better updater then. Thanks.

could be its bad....

I just went to versiontracker and found that Toast 5.2 has been pulled from the site... check it out

http://www.versiontracker.com/mp/new_search.m?productDB=mac&mode=Quick&OS_Filter=MacOSX&search=toast

Edit:

another intersting fact is that http://www.macintouch.com/ still links to the update from Roxio. and the URL for that is
http://softwareupdates.roxio.com/gm/Products/en/Toast/Titanium/v5/Toast_52_Ti_Updater.hqx

maybe it is just a GM after all.... its in the URL path. Roxio still has not placed the update on their website yet

you could burn a 74min (650MB) CD-R in 1.4 min

a 80min (700MB) CD-R i 1.53 min.

but you need a nother 30sec to 1 min for it to write the index... thats dam fast!

i really don't think that even with firewire speed one could burn at 52x.... not sure about scsi, don't know much about hardware really...

but it just doesn't seem like there's fast enough data access for that.... hmm

anyone know otherwise?

over my 4x, I think I could live with that......

Let's say you don't know much about firewire speeds...take a simple approach. Someone said you could burn an 80min CD in 1.53 minutes. Multiply by 60, and you get 91.8 seconds. Now, let's just assume some things as an upper bound, but let's say that this is the time it burns the entire CD (700 MB). So, the transfer rate to the CD is the 700 MB/91.8sec = 7.6 MB/sec.

This falls easily within Firewire's capabilities. Check out any firewire hard drive, and see what they advertise as the read/write speeds achievable. EZzzz:D :p

Tell your wife that I said it was ok for you get get an upgrade :)... you need one. I hade a USB 4x CD-R... that only really burned at 2x with out errors. I now have a 12x that came with my Quicksilver... much better but... 52x very fast. I have seen 42x (internal) for as low as $150... an upgrade may be cheeper than you think.

Removed from VersionTracker Until October 3 or 4

I guess Roxio will have to use a different installer technology. Most of the early adopters last night got bad installs. I was one of the lucky ones with no problems. But most got unexpected quits or outright crashes. Bummer.

I thought I was installing the update on other drives and partitions. It looked like it was. But afterwards all those places had no sign of 5.2 anywhere.

Roxio has obviously hit a brick wall with their obsolete and antiquated installer.

I give odds on this, since their Windows 2000 scandal over EZCD 5 Platinum. For those who don't know, if you installed it, (It said it was 100% compatiable with Windows 2000 on the Box) it would render your PC useless, as it would crash at startup.

Heh! The odds seem to be in our favor, aslater18, considering the Roxio/Adaptec track record. Anyone want to pony up? :p

MMC-3 compatible drives?

So can anyone tell me if the DVD burner in my quicksilver is MMC-3 compatible? It's the Pioneer 104 drive.

I've had a stereo for years now that can do CT-TEXT, but I've never seen it work becuase I've never had a CD with CD-TEXT...

It is defintely not the final version. I tried exporting a file to MPEG-1 with the new 'fast' encoder that does not work as it has expired. This has to be proof that we are definitely not using the final version.

Oh well, I can wait for two days.............

for my file to export to MPEG.

Well I use a 40x and it works fine. No problems at all. In fact, I paid $49 for the drive. Yup, $49. I gout it at Staples. They are clearing out old CDR's and got a 40x24x40 IDE drive. I went to the Roxio site and it said Toast was compatible with ALL IDE drives. So I put it in a QueFire! case that had a 12x10x32 drive in it. Plugged it in and Toast recognized it. So....keep those external firewire burners, they are upgradeable! I am glad because I spent a ton on the 12x QueFire when it first came out. Now I got a 40x in the same cool case.

Was The Thursday Toast 5.2 Download At VersionTracker A Cruel Hoax?

Based on Roxio's denial they ever put the real release on VersionTracker, was that some rogue employee's idea of a hoax Thursday night? How can ANYBODY put up a download at VersionTracker without the publisher's approval? This hurts the credibility of the VersionTracker administration. I rely on VersionTracker to be giving me the real deal and only the real deal. How could and did that happen?

Yes, the Pioneer A-104 DVD-RW is MMC-3 compatible. (Toast displays this information in its footline!)

I made a very similar comment on the VersionTracker rating feedback area during the time the 5.2 updater was up. I totally agree with your opinions here.

However, I do have Toast 5.2 running on all four of my Macs, and it is GREAT! Had to do some deleting of the old software and re-installing of the OS9 5.o version, but it is working fine now. ;)
