Thanks for sharing this. I learned something new today :) As for the movie, can’t wait to watch. Some of the other more recent WWII movies have been a disappointment (looking at you Midway).

Actually the new Midway movie was way more historically accurate than the garbage, made for TV movie from the 1970s. Even the host of big name stars couldn't make the Battle of Midway movie with Charleton Heston watchable. The new one was truly good, IMO. I do think they skimped a bit on creating action scenes because I saw several scenes that seemed to be reusing the same basic CGI, but marginally changed. I think the issue with the new Midway movie is the near total lack of viewers having much knowledge of the actual history of that battle, or much of anything else from WWII. As a history buff I knew the backstories and the history, so most of the scenes made sense to me. If they had put in more brief explanations to setup the scenes so viewers understood them, then it would have been enjoyable to many more people than it was. Basically the new Midway movie require a better than average historical knowledge of the actual battle, but because the war ended 75 years ago, and very long time ago, most people don't have that historical knowledge floating around in their brains anymore.

It’s a fictional story. Based on a fictional book "The Good Shepherd". If it were acurate, it’d be a problem.

When I as growing up in the 1960s, the vast majority of WWII movies and TV shows were basically about fictitious battles, units, people, etc. For example, the Dirty Dozen. Even those about real battles often were historically inaccurate, for example The Battle of the Bulge. Even the acclaimed Great Escape was flawed by adding American POWs. The American POWs had been moved to another camp long before the escape. My dad was a combat veteran of the South Pacific theater of operations, and I remember him getting so angry when watching some of the movies that were so inaccurate. I remember going through the Nimitze Museum with him shortly before he passed away. There was a huge mural on a wall depicting the battles in the Island Hopping campaign, along with units and dates. He pointed out several glaring mistakes the museum had made. So even the pros get it wrong if they don’t do the proper research.

Excellent movie. Same guys that did Band of Brothers and Pacific had their hands on this. As a former Navy Surface Warrior loved seeing the accurate commands and comms between CIC and the bridge as the ship was put into position for attacking the U-boats. Good stuff.

This reminded me of this article https://metro.co.uk/2020/07/06/tom-...e-greyhound-going-straight-apple-tv-12953041/

Tom Hanks was sad that his movie is coming directly to Apple TV+ instead of the theater. I like Tom Hanks and all but I bag to differ the typical experience at a movie theater and how expensive they are these days. Honestly, if this was in theater I would have never even give a second thought as War movie typically is not my thing. But with the ease of access and comfort of my home might just give it a try.

Just finished it myself, very enjoyable movie. Technically very accurate. The only thing I take issue with is the above description "battling with his own demons." I could see him battling self doubt as this was his first crossing in command of a destroyer and the convoy screen itself, but if he had demons beyond that I must have missed them. The only thing he seemed concerned about other than surviving his first command was the blonde back home. Besides an excuse to give elizabeth shue a paycheck I'm not sure what she was even doing there frankly. Hanks' characterizations are so good that he didn't need that minimal bit of backstory to make his Captain more human. Everything you needed to know about what sort of person he was came out in his interactions with his crew.
Good movie though, well shot and acted. Nothing that will be earning any Oscar noms other than score and technical stuff but very much worth a watch.

I would love for Hank's next WWII epic to be about the battle of Attu.

A lot of folks are unaware that in WWII there was a major battle in Alaska on a small island that included a Japanese charge and hand to hand combat.

It is also the most well-preserved WWII battlefield in the whole world.

77 years later you can still see the bomb craters from bombs dropped by the USA on the airfield the Japanese army was working on.
My old outfit, 7th Infantry Division was the primary force in that battle. My dad was a 4 Stack APD sailor in WW2, they were converted DD's and they were used to land the troops at Attu.

It was a lot better than I expected based on the early reviews. It is not a "character" piece like some of the other WWII movies Hanks has done, this is one long 48 hour stretch of naval battle that shows the conditions and bravery of the sailors and merchant marine as they struggled to supply Europe with necessary supplies for the war effort. I felt it was very well done.

Midway may not have been on par with Saving Private Ryan, the Pacific, Band of Brothers, etc. but it was leaps and bounds better than something like Pearl Harbor. I really enjoyed it because I went in to it with low expectations because of the low Rotten Tomatoes score.

Guess I'm not the norm. I just watched it. I enjoyed it, but am certainly glad I didn't pay any money (aside from my getting the ATV+ from getting my iPhone 11Pro) to see it. It was entertaining, but lacked in many areas. Worth watching, but not worth any hype, IMHO. I'll probably watch again, just to see if I didn't give it a fair shot though. As is the case with many (or maybe most) movies, I enjoyed the trailer far more than the actual movie.

PS: I usually am a pretty solid fan of anything acted/produced by Mr. Hanks. I did appreciate the historical perspective on how dangerous those Atlantic crossings were though.

Came here to basically write the same post. Hard to beat Hanks’ acting, but I kept waiting for something more climatic to happen.

Once I finished, I still had a craving for some WWII high seas drama, so I put on Das Boot.

Forgot to add this has a properly powerful soundtrack. If you have a really high quality audio system and subwoofer, this movie will thump through your chest cavity and make your neighbours think their house is being shelled with heavy artillery.

Only criticism for me was that the image quality seemed a bit off compared to other Apple TV+ content I've seen. Feels like the bitrate has been dialled down significantly over recent months. For the most part it's a very dark movie and this manifests slightly substandard black levels and shadow detail in many scenes. Even on a high-end OLED set. All relative, of course...it still looks great, but not demo material in that regard.

film was ok, no character development, was like going from his girlfriend turning him down to being on a boat.....war, blowing up a u boat, not eating his food....taking a sip of coffee, more war, more war, blow up a u boat.... the end..... so much lost potential for this one.

I agree to an extent. What little character development there was felt like a token gesture. Elizabeth Shue was criminally under-utilised to the point where she should have been left out entirely. All I took from that part of the story was that he had a girlfriend who didn't seem all that bothered about marrying him. I do feel, though, that too much backstory may have diluted the pace and overall tone. My guess is that a lot this film ended up on the cutting room floor after test screenings.

For me this is more of an observation than a criticism, as I do often like a punchy movie that doesn't require too much of a time commitment. I don't think the experience would have benefitted from trying to be a three hour epic, put it that way.

I found myself asking why Elisabeth Shue was even in the movie.

You know, I was doing an AV installation in a gallery that had to last for 4 days. I connected the projector to a Mac Mini... IMPOSSIBLE!!!! The mac mini pushing notifications all the time!!!! it was not connected to any wi-fi, I just wanted to run a Quicktime movie full screen in a loop, and damn Apple pushing notifications. It felt like Windows with a virus.

6 U Boats, didn’t do much of hunting. Instead they played chicken with destroyers.
It’s an odd movie.

I really liked it. Straight into non stop action, no BS, uncomplicated movie. The CGI sucked though.

I liked it, even though I'll admit (sadly...) that it probably won't win any awards. The E. Shue character added nothing to the movie. I would have liked it to be a bit longer with more hunter/prey cat and mouse ala "The Enemy Below". But, reflecting on that movie, Greyhound"s primary mission was protecting a convoy, so "cat and mouse" not a reasonable request from viewers like me. I have a Sonos Arc SoundBar coming one of these days when they fill their backorders. I'm looking forward to watching it again with enhanced sound.

I want Spielberg and Apple to make a movie documenting the Sand Creek Massacre. Beyond the tragedy of the killing of women, children, and the elderly, there's a compelling story to be told with moral decisions of great consequence. You couldn't write a better story. Very apropos in today's climate.

And not just the men, but the women and the children too?

hates sand?

Spielberg confirmed to direct new Anakin Skywalker movie.

I agree, sound track was quite intense. I have a decent sounding system and think a lot of people would have found it a bit boring without one. I could forgive any problems with the CGI as there were many detailed scenes of complex ships. Watch "The Pixar Story" on Netflix and you might have a better appreciation of the amount of work they put into this film. Good Friday night entertainment without the constant barrage of insurance, pharma and laywer commercials.

Watched "The Command" the night before about the loss of the Russian sub "Kursk".
