How does the Tomb Raider series run on the new M1 chip? Also, which version is better, the App Store or Steam? I saw on the website that you can simplify controls for firing. can you customize other controls as well? I am disabled with almost normal use of one hand and very limited use of the other.

First of all, Shadow of the Tomb Raider was one of the featured demos during the WWDC Keynote Presentation last June; it ran really well under Rosetta 2. Since I do not own an Apple Silicon Mac I cannot verify its performance but since there is no one complaining that the demo was faked, I assume actual M1 Mac owners who have played this title are getting comparable performance to what was shown in June 2020 to a worldwide audience.

When you buy the Tomb Raider titles on Steam can get the same title on other supported platforms. I bought the remake trilogy and I've installed them on both Windows PC and Mac. These days I am sticking with my custom built Windows gaming PC since it has a better graphics card anyhow. The PC versions also have more mods than the Mac versions.

Therefore I buy my videogames on Steam.

I'm sure there's an online guide as to customizing the controls whether they be keyboard/mouse or gamepad. Note that these are game specific so you'll have to search for the instructions specific to the title.

Luckily Tomb Raider has a very large fanbase and there are several wikis and fan sites dedicated to the franchise.

Thank you for your response, it is greatly appreciated. so many have tried to be so helpful on these forums. I guess I just feel I am in over my head a bit. I just thought, and I guess I was wrong in this thinking that this processor would allow me to play a few games without that much effort or special setup. The two games I became most excited about are Tomb Raider and Planet Coaster. i had no idea that Planet Coaster you need a special mouse and my friend thinks that the Tomb Raider controls are too difficult for me to play because of my limitations. it just seems before I buy a game an immense amount of research needs to be done. it just kind of stinks, but I have never been a gamer so I should of known. I just wish I could try out the game for a bit and I can't.

One step at a time.

Just download one free-to-play game that will run on your Mac like World of Warcraft or maybe League of Legends then customize the controls to see how well it can adapt to your specific needs.

Leave the Amazon Prime, Twitch, Discord, etc. to the side for now. You are not doing yourself any favors by having your attention scattered all over the place when your first priority to figure out how to download a game and run it.

There is nothing more I can contribute. I hereby bow out of further discussion.

Best of luck.

I understand. Thank you.

Hi. I have App Store versions of Shadow of the Tomb Raider, Rise of the Tomb Raider, and Tomb Raider (2013). Shadow (the most demanding of the bunch) runs well on my M1 Mac mini. I run it on high settings. I do see frame drops in big areas (such as Kawak Yaku and Paititi) but it's definitely playable. Averages around 30 FPS which is the sweet spot for me. If you're happy running the game at medium settings (it still looks good!) you can get even better performance.

It has an option that lets you click the mouse once to pull out your weapon, rather than have to hold it. You click your mouse again a second time to put your weapon away. You can change all of the key bindings too.

Rise of the Tomb Raider runs really well even on high settings for me, and Tomb Raider (2013) runs perfect as long as I don't turn on the super-flashy hair effects for Lara (these aren't a problem in the newer ones strangely enough).

If you like to play games on Windows as well the steam versions are cross platform, so you can buy it on Steam for Mac and then play it on Windows too. The App Store version will only work on Macs.

This game ended up being too difficult and I was stuck in a cave for over 35 minutes and couldn't figure out a way to get out. I ended up getting a refund through Steam because I was under the 2 hours. I am now playing Apple Arcade games that i am enjoying. Can this thread be deleted? I appreciate everyone's responses.

If you ever care to revisit the Tomb Raider franchise, consider consulting a game walkthrough if you are stuck.

For story-driven titles like the Tomb Raider titles this is helpful. What is a walkthrough? It's basically a beginner's guide. Since the Tomb Raider franchise is one of the most popular, there are lots of these. Some can be accessed via the game's Steam page. There are of course a bunch of written articles and YouTube videos. That's right, the latter is a video screen capture of an expert player doing all of the necessary tasks needed to get from Point A to Point B (the main quest). This is often broken down by chapter or level.

I have used these before when I find myself stuck somewhere (I totally suck at videogames so this happens rather frequently). Is it "cheating"? Perhaps but when I'm playing videogames, I'm trying to have fun. If I need a little, ahem, mentoring, I'm okay with that. When I feel like I've had enough "coaching" I press the pause button on the video then return to the game.

After a while you might start to see a pattern. Certain pertinent objects have highlights or other clues that indicate that you should explore to interact with that object.

It's something to think about if you reconsider Tomb Raider or other similar titles that have a significant amount of puzzle solving. The most important thing is that you are having fun with your current games. Surfers have a saying: the best surfer is the one having the most fun in the water. I'm sure skateboarders say the same thing. And snowboarders...

If you are having fun with Apple Arcade titles then you are spending your leisure time well. Don't play games that aren't fun. That's like reading a book that you hate. Life is too short for that nonsense.

Thanks for all the advice!!! Yes, I am having fun playing the Apple Arcade game I am playing. The two on Steam that I tried, Tomb Raider and Planet Coaster were just too much for me to try and figure out and causing too much frustration. For the time being, I am going to stick with what I am doing but I will keep in mind all of your advice if I want to revisit those types of games. My best friend's husband had all types of frustration with Planet Coaster as well and asked for a refund just like I did because he was under the two hour period.
