Cost for 4 lines with this usage:

line 1: unlimited talk, unlimited text, unlimited data
line 2: unlimited talk, unlimited text, 2GB of data
line 3: unlimited talk, unlimited text, 500MB of data
line 4: unlimited talk, unlimited text, 500MB of data

$80 (first 2 lines) + $10 (3rd line) + $10 (4th line) + $20 (unlimited data for line 1) + $10 (2GB for line 2) = $130

$130 / 4 = $32.5

Tmobile new plans may appeal to those with 1 line. Maybe 2 lines.

But the math gets complicated when u start adding lines 3-5 at post paid carriers that offer up to a $400 subsidy per line. Also factor in discounts up to 25-28% some people get at ATT/Verizon/Sprint.

I don't think this will have any effect on the 2 big 2 carriers. Doubt it will affect sprint either.

60% of Americans are already on family plans and 88% have either family plans or discounts or both.

T-mobile needed to present this plan 4 years ago when it mattered. At least sprint was willing to go any mobile 3-4 years ago to keep themselves up with the jones

Americans would not like paying $649 (Full price) for the iPhone

Let us see how t-mobile plans succeeds!! :)

Many folks were already paying that to get a legit unlocked iPhone to use on T-Mobile so it may not make a difference. And if they offer payment plans for the phone it will come out about the same except that the two items are separate bills so you aren't paying the same rate plan at month 30 as you are at month 3

----------

CNET reports that T-Mobile will finally announce plans to sell the iPhone at tomorrow's "Uncarrier" event in New York City.

If this is true it is an interesting turn of event given Apple's strong ruling that THEY be the ones to announce anything major involving their products

----------

So t-mobile plans to end subsidies on phones or just offer a better non-contract price?

This could be very bad news if other carriers follow suit. iPhone would lose significant market share to cheap Android phones.

If the carriers drop subsidies those Android phones won't be as cheap as they are now.

How much would something like this cost on AT&T, Verizon and Sprint? (it's $130 a month on T-Mobile).

line 1: unlimited talk, unlimited text, unlimited data
line 2: unlimited talk, unlimited text, 2GB of data
line 3: unlimited talk, unlimited text, 500MB of data
line 4: unlimited talk, unlimited text, 500MB of data

$80 (first 2 lines) + $10 (3rd line) + $10 (4th line) + $20 (unlimited data for line 1) + $10 (2GB for line 2) = $130

$130 / 4 = $32.5

I applaud what T-Mobile is doing. Even better would be if they had a choice between different deals with and without a contract. They can reasonably charge less for contract customers, or slightly more for monthly customers.

I'm not sure why they eliminated the contract choice altogether - I thought that they were formerly a hybrid.

There is also rumors they will be rolling out LTE tomorrow to 7 markets: Las Vegas, Phoenix, San Jose, Houston, DC, Kansas City (MO), and Baltimore.

If the carriers drop subsidies those Android phones won't be as cheap as they are now.

Except the Nexus 4 since it is very cheap right now.

$299 unlocked and $349 unlocked compare to $550-600 for the iphone.

I believe they will finance it for you.
Still, when you compare:

(current AT&T Unlimited Plan + subsidize price of an iPhone)
VS
(T-Mobile's current Unlimited Plan + the full price of an iPhone)

the difference is huge!

Starting tomorrow, their plans are going to be much lower (well... That's what they promised!).

Anyone with basic math skills should be able to figure out which carrier makes more sense financially. Not now.... Tomorrow. I can't wait! :D

I don't even bother to compare Verizon and Sprint. Lame CDMA network, can't Talk and Surf at the same time. Crappy!

And why not?

(Yes, I always buy my phones off contract.)

Im sure he was speaking in the general sense. Anyone who believes anything larger than a VERY small minority of Americans buys off contract phones is delusional.

Some quick numbers states it is $230 per month sharing 6gb of data. That turns out being $100 per month more expensive, which ends up being $2400 over the life of the contract (realistically you can upgrade at 20 months in shaving $400 off of that if you went that route). Factoring in the $400 subsidy (and assuming tmo isn't giving one at all) we are saving about $400 over 20 months on four lines or about $5 per month per line. For those, like me, who have tried tmo and have had very bad coverage, that $5 a month is worth the premium. But again, this assumes you have four iPhone users on your plan to begin with.

This is probably some kind of marketing gimmick. I seem to remember a while back carriers tried this before, one started and then the rest followed. Then after a while they start jacking their rates and services up again. Just bait and switch. People fall for it every time.

Lots of replies

lots of replies for my initial post :D

I think there are couple of things note before jumping the gun; I think these are the factors will decide which is cheaper or not

1) Heavy data user?
2) how much hot spot facility you need
3) do you have discount from your work (not sure if t-mobile new plans offer work discount or not)
4) iPhone unlocked or not
5) coverage in your area
6) how often you like to upgrade your shiny new iToy

for me two iPhones I pay about $120 a month (after work discount) and use less than 3GB in total, so ATT works for me. But i would love to get an unlocked iPhone under contract or with installment plan. :D

With the TMobile plan, you would pay $100 and have 2GB of data for each line, so it would be a bit cheaper if that would work for you.

but I have to pay full price right? ;) where as ATT I paying $199

Yea, you either buy the phone outright or make the monthly payments on it. Now I understand what you meant. Do the math for both carriers and see what it costs for 2 years.

The plan is either full price up front or a down payment with monthly installments tacked onto your cell bill.

I can totally see people doing this. They pay for the phones and more the other way. If it takes you 18 months to pay off the subsidy, then you can go ahead and upgrade to another phone, or just pay less each month.

The key is how much cheaper the service is and how much premium they try and get for the loan of the device cost. If they do this right and did the things to their network, this may turn out quite fantastic for T-mobile.

I hope this idea spreads to the UK as I tend to drift way past my contract end dates (had my 3GS for 3 years!). It will be interesting to see if the phones are carrier locked still.

Too expensive!!

If I have to pay the full price for the iPhone it's not worth it because I would have to buy three for my family which comes to a lot of money that I don't have!!!:eek:

Are you serious? All the UK networks have had 'sim-only' plans for years already. Or do you mean you wish the networks would give you a separate loan to spread the cost of the phone? When your 3GS went out of contract all you had to do was call up and switch to a better tariff and/or get your handset unlocked for free. When my 3G went out of contract, O2 unlocked it and put me on 'iPhone Simplicity 20'- £20 per month for 1200 minutes, 600 texts, unlimited data & 'free' wifi hotspot access... on a 30 day rolling contract. Still on that tariff- nothing comes close these days...
