I don't know what TomTom app you're using, but the one I have has IQ routing. There isn't a Homer Simpson voice, but that doesn't make it a scam.

Please don't judge things you've never used.

Are you seriously telling me this stupid piece of plastic which probably cost tomtom less than £5 to make is worth £100?

I have the iPod touch version and I'm hoping I can somehow squeeze it in there. If not then I'm just going to use my iPod touch only as a turn-by-turn GPS or I may just buy a cheaper iPhone holder w/o a GPS chip and just use the iPhone's GPS for it.

It's definitely worth it. IIt has helped me out on several occasions especially when I'm out of town.

I got the Magellan car kit which has the adjustable arm on it. Not expecting any problems with it.

I'm not sure if your referring to the gps on the phone or on the kit but let me tell you what i know for sure.. The tomtom kit has it's own "enhanced" gps chip inside that's designed to replace the gps within the iphone.. When the phone is docked it disables from the iphone's gps and uses the car kit's gps instead.. I'm almost positive that it connects to the gps through the dock because i've put the phone in airplane mode then docked it and I had a full gps signal. As far as it utilizing bluetooth, that's so it can take and receive calls.. u dig?

Yes, that's what I meant... I've used the kit's GPS without bluetooth being on. The Bluetooth appears to be just for the speakerphone feature.

Hey guys sorry for the bad info, just tested with the tom tom car kit tool, gps does come through the dock connection. I think i was just getting confused with my nokia n95 days where you could connect to a bluetooth gps for use with mobile tomtom.

Although it is advertized that the Magellan car kit supports most other nav apps, I heard/read that Tom Tom app doesn't work with the Magellan car kit.

iphone 4 with tomtom car kit

Ok my iphone 4 arrived today, went to put it in my TomTom car kit. It fits but would not connect to the bluetooth or charger. So instanly I got pissed off. Then decided to take a closer look. In order for the phone to connect to the car kit it needs to completly click in which it does but since it is thinner it is not allowing the docking port to rock all the way back. So I rolled a piece of paper and placed behind the iphone 4 and it worked. So I'm thinking they will come up with a fix in the near future, if not i can make a simple mod to fix it.

Yea I couldn't get mine to work. I'll try what you did. If it doesn't work, I'm not buying another one.

I just tried this method and it worked. I did get a warning saying that the device wasn't compatible and it only found it as "handsfree" under Bluetooth devices.

Can you explain what you mean by "just place the paper at the bottom"?

When I put mine, it fits, but does not power nor route the sound to Tom Tom Car kit.

Thanks.

At the bottom of the kit where the phone docks in and it pushes back into the device. Basically the bit of paper needs to hold that back. I put a folded bit of paper over the section first then put the phone in over it.

I sure hope that TomTom either comes up with an adapter for the existing model or comes out with a new version of the car kit for iPhone 4. These paper and Velcro workarounds are just not working for me.

Tom Tom car kit + iPhone 4 temporary fix

My wife and I both have Tom Tom car kits and came out this morning to discover our wonderful new iPhone 4's did not work in the car kit. Please post a pic of the "rolled up paper" temporary fix... so I can visualize the fix.

Already called Tom Tom who confirmed (before I found this thread) that the new iPhone would not work and they are already looking into a more permanment fix. Thanks!

It would be helpful if you could take a photo of the paper fix, I can't quite visualize the fix. Sorry...

Thanks!

Yeah...I tried the velcro trick that Engadget mentions. It doesn't work for me. Sigh...hopefully TomTom will get a permanent solution for this soon!

That little hack worked like a dream for me!.. Except I used a piece of rubber.. I don't understand how i doesn't work for some of you.. The idea is your pretty much compensating for the thin design of the iphone 4 by putting something between the phone and that rocker thingy that enables the kit to communicate with the dock.. If the velcro didn't work maybe it wasn't thick enough?

I have tried paper, velcro, rubber, and rubber bands with no results. The phone never indicates that it is charging and the TomTom app never recognizes docking or acquiring a gps signal. Fortunately, I still have time to return it to the Apple store.
