Do you need the Tom-Tom app for this to work? Or can you have a different brand app and use it with the Tom-Tom car kit?

I'm more interested in the cradle than the app. In Canada they changed the laws so it's illegal to use a cell phone and drive - so now I'm looking for a great hands free unit. I thought this might be it. Flippin expensive though.
