Seems like they posted a new Q+A to thier FAQ section of site:

    6. Will application upgrades be free or do I need to pay for them?

TomTom will release several updates to its TomTom for iPhone application this year. These new versions of the application will systematically embed an updated safety camera database (for those markets for which safety cameras are already included) as well as some important additional features. These upgrades will be made available free of charge for existing users of the TomTom for iPhone application. More details on the next free upgrade will be communicated soon via our iTunes product page and on iphone.tomtom.com

Their answer doesn't answer the question. It only says that they make new maps 4 times a year. It doesn't say anything about how they will be available on the phone, nor for how much if anything.

    Uhhh...no.

    From the TomTom iPhone FAQ:

    12. Will the map updates be free or do I need to pay for them?

Currently, installing a new map is not necessary, as the TomTom app for iPhone features the latest Tele Atlas map (version 8:30). It’s TomTom’s policy to always make the latest maps available to its users, in both an easy and affordable way. When new maps become available, TomTom will inform its users how to upgrade their map.

There's nothing saying those will be free. In fact, I get the impression there will be some as-yet-to-be-determined charge.

What irritates me is that TomTom is so tight-lipped with the planned feature set. You just don't know what's coming next. I think that's a crummy way to do business when you're looking at a $100 product.

There's no way I'm buying that TomTom will update their iPhone app 'several' times this year, unless they're talking about the next 365 days. But by 12/31/09? I'll believe it when I see it.

LOL if you believe Tom Tom's timing based on the vapor car kit, then "several" will equate to two and "this year" will equal over the next 365 days.
