The lightning port is very very very very very very very very very very very very far from being a standard. My other problem with the lighting port is that it's proprietary and only on Apple devices. I will NOT stand for that since I have plenty of other devices which does NOT have one along with my Macbook Pro, Windows laptops, Android tablets and console controllers. I will NOT buy another iPhone if they do this and NOT add a USB C port instead. I am all for advancing technology but using a proprietary port is not advancing anything than lining Apple already greedy pockets. USB C headphones would be a step in the right direction for the general mass not Apples way. Sorry I'm no Apple drone and not drinking their Kool-aid either.

I agree with this. I understand that technology does have to advance and since the headphone port is older technology, it would make sense for it to be removed eventually. However, I would prefer it to move to a standard port such as USB-C and not a proprietary port. Proprietary doesn't help anybody except Apple. While Apple makes good products I'm finding myself getting lured away.

Just because headphone ports have been around for awhile doesn't make them outdated tech, not by a long shot.

A headphone port is merely an analog to analog connection. There is no "tech", similar to how your television/computer plugs into a wall outlet.

Not saying there aren't better ways to get sounds to your ears, just that saying a connection is outdated is a little silly. At SOME POINT there is going to be a analog connection (albeit maybe soldered) prior to the driver. We hear analog signals.

You've also been around long enough to realize not all new technology is good technology. If this was about improving something technology/usability, I'd be all for it. But this is a clear money grab to push the use of a proprietary interface. I can't wait for Eddie to tout the advantages of a Lightning set of Beats.

I,m still pissed my iPhone has no place to put my 8 track cassettes in.

The 3.5mm headphone jack is an analog technology which requires chip makers to add a DAC inside their cpu's.... With USB C or the lightning cable the DAC can be in the headphone if I have it correct.

So we're at the point where having an adapter is a reasonable solution? That's simple and'just works'

Adapters get lost, broken, forgotten etc. It's adds one more thing to keep up without giving us anything functional in return.

Agreed. I'm hoping Apple doesn't drop the headphone jack.

Very good point. We don't just use our headphones with our phones.

That is correct. But not in opposition to the point I was making. There is still an analog connection to the drivers, be it in the phone or in the headphones. The analog technology itself isn't obsolete ("ancient") tech. The 3.5mm port is merely a connection.

A DAC is a DAC and at the point you can "hear" a difference in quality is outrageously priced studio equipment. See toms hardware for details.

The amp on the other hand can make a difference in audio quality and especially volume.

Regardless of all of that the 3.5mm port doesn't have any effect what so ever to the Lightning (or pipe dream of USB C) port.

I'm getting a little off my point. All I was trying to say is calling a connection like the 3.5mm port obsolete/outdated/antiquated/etc technology is a little silly since that connection will always exist... somewhere... well until we can interpret digital signals with our brains.
