So I really need a new laptop and my buddy has a discount where I get 30% off of the regular price. This means I can buy the base model for around 2k.

I know that apple will probably release new models later this year? And I was wondering if it is a stupid decsision to buy one know? Will it lose much value?

Any input would be appreciated.

The 16” MBP is a great machine. You can also get it for that price on Amazon, in the Apple Refurb Store, Best Buy and other retailers. Nothing is definite about when a new model will be released. If you need one now, go for it.

Thanks, yeah I can't really wait until later this year... Damn how typical a new generation is just around the corner... :(

I'll say just get the MBP 16", it's a great machine except for the external monitor issue. While the new macbook might has advantages, the current MBP line up allows you to run Windows off bootcamp or parallel. It will serve well for the next couple of years until the Apple Silicon matures for upgrade.

It is very unlikely that the 16” will see significant improvements this year. Intel did release new CPU models, but they are just rebranded chips with marginally higher clocks - in benchmarks they don’t show any performance improvements. AMD is expected to launch new high-end GPUs but that is not likely to affect the MBP. I think you should be “safe” to buy - even if there is going to be an update, it’s not going to change much.

If I were you, I would buy the current model right away. It's a very much refined laptop, and you need a new laptop now. So, why not? You should be aware of the heat issue under simultaneous use of external and MBP's own monitors, though.

As for the next 16" model, I kind of doubt it will come this year because it would most likely come with either Intel's Tiger Lake H CPU or Apple Silicon; the newest 10th gen H series brought practically zero improvement, and Apple apparently decided to skip this generation of Intel CPUs entirely for 16" MBP when they introduced the new GPU option in June. I could be totally wrong about how quickly Apple silicon based 16" will come out, though.

Absolutely not. I'll be buying one later this year while they're still available. They're absolute beasts right now and will remain absolute beasts even after Apple releases their new Macs. Also, since it's an Intel machine, it will be able to run Windows or Linux long after Apple stops releasing macOS updates for it.

Do you need a new system or want one? If you need one to replace a dead or dying system then go ahead and get one. But know since it will be replaced with an Apple Silicon system in a year or so and likely is not going to hold its resale value that well.

Howdy piecookie,

What value would you lose? If a replacement model is released this November (unknown at this time), the 2019 16" Model would only lose value if you tried to sell it right away. If you plan on keeping it for a few years (which is what I plan on doing), the loss would be mitigated anyway :). Good luck!
