My Apple TV 4K 2nd gen remote broke so I took it into the Apple Store for AppleCare support. The tech said they did not have any replacement in stock and ordered one for me to pick up later. I checked the invoice and it was a gen 3 remote, usb-c, not lightning. Hopefully they give me the usb-c cord because if not, I would have to purchase one just to charge it…

Weird thing is the invoice total was $98 for my replacement…

Nice they give you an upgrade! If they don't give you a cord, don't buy it at the Apple store. You can get one at Walmart for less than $10.

It isn't like it is much of an upgrade. Yes it has a USB-C charging port rather than Lightning, but the buttons tend to get sticky over time. I'm thinking about switching to my older 2021 remote for my 2022 because it works better. I'm not using the 2021 right now so no problem repurposing its older remote that works very reliably.

I've never had that problem and I have owned every Apple TV version.
Apple TV remote buttons are prone to sticking when you get stuff like liquid on them (just like any remote). But I have owned plenty of Siri Remotes and have never had an issue. Plus, the new remote is the same internals and buttons as the Apple TV 4K 2nd gen other than the usb-c connector. So, it certainly isn't more prone to sticking than the previous remote.

The way things are going lightning won't exist or even be acknowledged by Apple as existing by next year so start buying those cables now 😂

I went in and told them they orders the wrong one and I have the lightning remote. The tech realized the mistake and ordered me a replacement. I went back in and it was the same, usb-c remote. Apparently they are unable to order the lightning remote since it’s not made anymore from what I took from the tech. They said they can try but it might be the black Siri Remote, not the silver one and we’ll be back at step one. I said I’ll take the usb-c one and they gave me a usb-c cable along with it.

I have four Apple TV 4K 2nd gen all with lightning remotes so this will be interesting if the other remotes break. The remote wasn’t sticking or anything, I think it just went bad. They even took it back and took it apart and said it was bad.
