I've actually found that new MacBook users (friends of mine actually) have no idea what the Apple Remote does (Front Row) until I video-chat with them via iChat and show them...lots of them don't know about Dashboard either.

The Apple Remote actually has lots of other uses with programs like iTunes, Quicktime, Keynote, etc.

Hitting Cmd-Option-Ctrl-8 and then going to your Dashboard is pretty trippy. :)

that there is no cut command in the finder

that alone made me sell my first mac because i couldn't stand it lol. i pray to god leopard fixes that issue.

there is no cut, but apple have almost perfected drag 'n' drop.

i doubt that leapord will as there is nothing that needs to be 'fixed'. its not the Mac OS way of doing things. Drag and Drop is how its done on OS X. its a different system, so naturally things are done in a different manner...

OS X has the best keyboard shortcuts -- it beats Windows and Linux by far. I don't see why cut isn't a keyboard shortcut option (it isn't even a menu option) in Finder and I am one of those hoping that it is added to Leopard just as I hoped it was added to Tiger.

Here is a list of the features that aren't necessarily obvious but are very useful:

- Exposé (F9; F10; F11).
- Use the option key while typing for accent marks.
- Cmd+` (for windows) and Cmd+tab (for applications).
- Ctrl+click for right clicking.
- Right click on selected picture(s) in Finder and select slideshow option.
- Stop clicking as much and start learning more keyboard shortcuts (link -- as was posted by deepy).
- You can move files and change their name while they are open!
- Enable red underline Spell Check (similar to Word's) in Safari (for forum typing) through right-clicking on the box where you type text and selecting the "Spelling"-->"Check Spelling as You Type" option.
- Press cmd+option+8 to enable (or disable) zooming (wait a couple seconds) then press cmd+option+= until you are zoomed in to a good level. When you are done (or if you want to zoom out part way) press cmd+option+- to zoom out.
- Don't buy Anti-Virus software -- it harms your computer more than it helps it. (Unless you have a macro virus in Word that has worked its way into several Word documents Anti-Virus software won't help.)
- No need to defragment your hard drive -- it is done automatically.
- Repair permissions at least once a week. (To do so open the "Disk Utility" application in the Folders "Hard Drive"-->"Applications"-->"Utilities" and click the "Repair Disk Permissions" button when your computer hard drive is selected.) If you use the SuperDuper! backup application (which I recommend) it can repair permissions for you.
- Many types of programs can be modified/reprogrammed if you right-click on them and click the "Show Package Contents" button.
- Changing icons is as easy as copying an icon (cmd+c) (or even a picture) and then pasting it (cmd+v) into the get info window's icon of a file or folder.
- There are neat effects when shift is held down with such things as minimizing windows, going in and out of Dashboard and Front row, dragging in and out widgets, closing widgets, using exposé, etc. You should try experimenting with this.
- Cmd+clicking on the title of a window you can see the file location (on most applications such as Word, Keynote, Safari, Finder, Preview, etc.).
- Hiding applications (cmd+h) usually works better than minimizing windows (cmd+m).
- If you want to print the screen of the whole window press cmd+p and then save it as a file by selecting the "PDF" menu option and then the "Save as PDF" option. This feature is useful for digital printouts of anything you can print but want a digital file of instead.
- Don't shutdown the computer -- put it to sleep instead.
- Use column view on Finder windows (cmd+3).
- Install the developer tools with your computer install disk (in case they weren't installed when you purchased your computer).
- Don't miss out on the "Grapher" 3D graphing calculator application located on your hard drive here "Hard Drive"-->"Applications"-->"Utilities".

(By the way any time I referenced the "cmd" key I was referring to the command key which is the key with a hollow Apple logo on the left side of it and a cool swirly design on the right side of it.)

I know it is much more than 10 but I hope it helps. ;)

That one in particular is great when you're typing in foreign languages. Drives Windows users mad trying to find out how you're doing it along with other characters like ¡, ¿, & œ etc. When they ask, you just have to say "Hold down Option and hit 1" or whatever the keypress is, then when it doesn't work ask them if they're not on a Mac yet or if they're still on Windows :)

Screenshots

Taking screenshots can be done with the following combinations

cmd+shift+3 = whole screen
cmd+shift+4 = selection tool
cmd+shift+4 then space = window/control selector

The picture will be placed on the desktop.

If you tack on the ctrl key to each of those, you get a picture in the clipboard, ready to be pasted into a document, rather than on the desktop.

is SuperDuper free? i see a download now button on the site which says

"You can download SuperDuper! v2.1.3 right now and back up and clone your drives for free — forever!"

but there is also a "buy now" button. so is it free?

It is indeed free, but by purchasing the full copy you can get some more features, different scheduling options, etc.

Thanks, gauchogolfer!

You can also open the Dictionary application, open Preferences, and mark the button "Open Dictionary panel". Now you can ctrl-click (or right-click) words and click Look Up in Dictionary to get the same contextual definition as cmd-ctrl-d

I assume this only works in Safari as well?

heres something i just learned 5 minutes ago..

cmd + option + t will open the character palette.. i used to have to have the international menubar thing to open it, now i can just press that :D

edit: nvm, turns out this isn't global.. it only works in some apps :(

I believe that you have to be using a Cocoa app for it to work. This was what finally pushed me from Firefox to Safari (and finally to Web Kit).

Oh, top ten tips? Use Web Kit as your browser.

I agree. Webkit is awesome. I've been using it as my default browser for a while now. But, downloading a new build everyday bugs me a bit :p

in no particular order

1. Services
2. Screen-zoom (in the universal access prefs i think). this is an invaluable feature that i always wish was available on the PC at work.
3. command-click a window icon for the file hierarchy
4.Expose - underused by a lot of people
5.Print to fax - available in some windows versions, but a lot of switchers don't realize it's available in OS X too.
6.One-click web server / FTP server
7.Spring loaded folders
8.Finder labels
9.Applescript/Automator - way easier than you would think
10.System-wide spell check

They have hourly build through SVN, but, do you need to download it everyday? as long as you feel good, there is no point to follow nightly build everyday, since there might be regression also. I only download new nightly when:
1. something wrong with the one i have
2. bored
