Wrong. I typed "wikipedia" alone in the address bar and guess where I ended up? www.wikipedia.org.
clevin is actually correct, if you type "wikipedia" Safari will add www. and .com, but wikimedia foundation owns wikipedia.com too and will redirect you to wikipedia.org. Ok, he's not 100% correct but almost. Safari will first do a dns lookup on "wikipedia" but if it receives the response "** server can't find wikipedia: NXDOMAIN" it will continue and try with www.wikipedia.com which will return a result.

As described above, your redirection is a function of wikipedia, not a function of safari.

and no, i dont think safari does any dns look up before adding www. and .com at all. ( .xxx is part of the dns, dns can't match an address without .xxx at all) Safari will just returns error page if it can't reach www.term-you-typed.com.

try type mozillazine and press enter, see what happens.
or type safari webkit and press enter, see what happens.

I have both. Huh. Guess I can get rid of VLC then.. goody I get to delete an app! I love freeing space.. :)

I just learned about another little application called video monkey. It is basically the code that was used for visual hub. Hear about it on Mac break weakly. Downloaded and it does what it says it does. Works pretty darn good!

Quote from the site:

Video Monkey is a free video encoding application exclusively for Mac. It was created after the demise of the great tool Visual Hub. Video Monkey borrows heavily from the Visual Hub video conversion tool, both conceptually and from the original code dump posted to SourceForge as TranscoderRedux.

x2

VLC is a great app. Plus it IS required in order to use HandBrake. I suggest keeping it.

I agree, VLC is well worth keeping.Saved my recordings a few times....one time VLC was able to play a recording when all else failed after the drive the recording was on was removed to soon.

Final Cut - expensive
Photoshop - expensive
Live Type - part of Final cut suite
MS Word
EyeTV
Handbrake - free
Firefox - free
Illustrator - part of Photoshop suite
Transmit - $10 (I think)
Onyx - free
Firstclass
Vixy Converter (beta)
Wiretap Studio (inexpensive)
iWork - relatively small cost for what you get
Mpegstreamclip (free)
Flipformac (free)
Stuffit Expander - free
VLC Player -free

Media: Quicktime+ Perian (FREE). Plays all popular formats

Torrent: uTorrent (FREE), mostly because I found out that Transmission can cause hardware failures and stuff. But also because xTorrent cost $25!!! and Tomato Torrent (FREE) needs updating. I am yet to try Azureus (FREE) (now called Vuze).

IM: All of my friends use MSN so naturally I use Adium which 100x better than Messenger for Mac and with the perk of being able to talk to Facebook friends!!! (FREE)

Office: iWork ($79?) cheaper and again 100x better than MS Office!!! I also like Neo Office (FREE)

Utilities: OnyX (FREE). Works just as it says in the description

I also use Handbrake for DVD rips. Photoshop (free torrent hack) or Seashore for Picture editing etc. Caffeine to keep my mac awake. Schoolhouse to keep track of my work. Coconut battery. Cooliris (safari or firefox plug-in) fantastic to view pics online etc. Google Notifier for my mail and last but not least Cube 2: Sauerbraten (free offline and online shooter based on the Quake engine)

Here's my list with links where appropriate:

1. Mail - works fine for me.
2. Safari - normally works fine and I like to be loyal to Apple.
3. Firefox - for when Safari doesn't work fine...
4. AddressBook - nice integration with everything else
5. iTunes - music and video, plus the path to my iPods and Iphone.
6. Handbrake - For encoding video. Can't be beat (requires VLC now)
7. VLC - now a requirement for Handbrake. I haven't really fully used its own capabilities yet...
8. Perian - adds support for more formats to Quicktime.
9. Quicktime - video that works.
10. iLife - Free with my iMac. I use iPhoto. There is an upgrade cost though going forward, so maybe this isn't fully "free"...
11. iChat - good for basic video chat and instant messaging
12. Thunderbird - my wife and I use different e-mail programs. She likes this one a lot. Saves having to have multiple accounts on one computer.
13. Time Machine - nice to have a backup!
14. DropBox - good for keeping my laptop in sync with my desktop.
15. iCal - basic calendar program.
16. Acrobat Reader - don't you always need this?
17. Flip4Mac WMV Player - Allows Quicktime to play Windows Media Video.
18. MetaX - Metadata tagger for MP4 files. Let's you easily add (among other things) movie posts, chapter information, rating, actors, etc.
19. Stuffit Expander - seamless decompression of files you download off the Internet. Perhaps not as useful as it once was, but a good standby.

I'll leave 20 blank to give me flexibility! :D

I can't really add too much to the very extensive lists that people have already posted, but depending on whether it'd be any use to you, OmniGraffle is a great tool for making flowcharts. It's handy for my work anyway so I thought I'd mention it :)

It's not free though - but since people are mentioning Office and Photoshop etc :)

In alphabetical order (b/c I'm scanning my apps folder), these are the the apps I find most useful to have. I won't include stock Apple apps like iTunes, Mail, iCal, Address Book, or Finder!

1Password-I use this every single day.
Adium
Awaken-cool iTunes alarm clock. I don't use it often (only when family is away and I need an alarm clock), but it's nice to have.
Bean-lightweight, good-looking text editor
Cyberduck
Delicious Library 2
Firefox-primary browser b/c of extensions and stuff.
Fluid-for Mint.com
Growl-helps keep the menu bar decluttered since Growl can let me know that things are running like they're supposed to.
Little Snitch-just nice to have.
MacGourmet Deluxe-for the wife.
NeoOffice-I don't really like it, but I don't feel like springing for iWork
Quicksilver-Would that someone would pick up development of this for SL...
Shovebox-holds things I don't feel like finding folders for
Speed Download 5-well integrated with FF plug-in; never used it w/ Safari
Transmission-fits my BT needs just fine.
Xee-Like Preview, but lighter.
Xmarks for Safari (keep ALL of my bookmarks synced up w/ the FF Foxmarks extension)

I normally look for freeware alternatives, but with the Mac Bundles I've picked up a lot of good software that I've found very convenient and great to have.

There are others that I have (The Hit List, Voodoo Pad Lite) that I plan to use a lot more once I get a new computer (currently we share a MacBook, and I can't utilize those tools to their full potential if I'm not using the computer at work, too).

Look at this thread it will explain better than I can (this is where i heard of the problems)

Thanks Alex. Your post prompted me to try a few others and I found that Vuze on 10.4.11 downloads is a LOT quicker than Transmission, which I've been using for years. The other thing is that Transmission's new versions no longer support Tiger, and Vuze does...............so thanks again. I just trashed Trans.

Glad I could be of assistance. I use both Vuze and uTorrent now. When I got my mac a few weeks ago I started using Transmission because I liked that it showed the down and up speeds in the dock but then I read that thread and trashed it immediately.
