I guess I should wait for an M2/M3 iMac refresh to replace my 2017 iMac, huh? 😅

(I'll miss that 27-inch screen though)
Interesting announcement today from LG on the thought.
Its not a retina but ends up being the same 2560x1440 as the 5K did.

You can't see 6K at that size...
Of course you can. 6K @ 32" is approx the same density as the current 5K @ 27".
Also the fact, that is that the exact spec of the current Apple Pro Display XDR. Don't need all the bells and whistles of the XDR, but M2/M3 iMac Pro 32"/6K could easily be a reality, it Apple wanted.

I'm curious, the mini-stopper for me wasn't RAM, but the lack of USB ports. Four? Really? How do you get by with only four USB ports?

I have six things plugged in to my desktop now, and I would need an external DVD drive and a Time-Machine disk with a Mini. The eight ports on the Studio would be completely filled, but at least there are enough.
I would expect there to be four USB-C/Thunderbolt ports on the next mini device. It's annoying that there aren't more ports on current M1 model, but I use a hub on my devices – it's another expense though and not without issues. For example, I use external SSDs (one connected permanently) and it regularly disconnects. I got the 1TB version and avoided maxing out on SSD because I had external SSDs already, but I would opt for extra storage next time (despite the cost).

If I were to buy a Studio, it would be for the processing power rather than the additional ports. The Studio starts at a price similar to what I think a high end mini will be, but the price accelerates once you start adding the additional storage etc. Plus it's likely that the M2/M3 version of the Studio will be coming at some point, so I would rather wait and see what happens with the mini first. If it's still mediocre, then I will see what happens to the Studio. I'm not in desperate need of a new device (just a want!)

You must have amazing vision.

My mistake, I meant 2022. You're right, 2021 was a great year. You may have a point about employees, I'm just basing this off the following:
News can be deceiving. They don’t report on the thousands of happy workers — just the few disgruntled ones. Best to take those reports with a grain of salt. And people leave companies for different reasons — family, health, environment — news tends to frame them as leaving because they are unhappy, but nobody can make that determination unless they have first hand knowledge. Think about all of the brilliant designers around the world — I’m sure most would absolutely love to be part of the team at Apple, designing the best technology products.

Very wrong, on multiple levels. Buyers are conditioned to (correctly) understand that tech constantly improves. A user ready to upgrade some device after 2-6 years of use wants the latest tech right now. Suggestions like "...can wait for the M3" are absurd, because the potential buyers already waited 2-6 years while their existing product aged out. Further waiting means lost sales for Apple and/or discounting, which creates its own problems.
Utter and completely wrong, on every level. Apple became the biggest tech company that ever was by ignoring and subverting all industry standards, cycles, rules and expectations. They literally don't give a **** what anybody wants including their customers. Since April 20, 2021 users are screaming for a large-screen iMac. It didn't came later that year, it didn't came this year and it won't come early next year. They wait until the screen and chip technology they want for the next iMac is ready. And they even stopped selling the old 27-inch Intel iMac, which easily could've been updated with a newer faster Inter processor. But no, they even suggest the Mac Studio ($1,999) plus Apple Studio Display ($1,599) for everyone looking for a 27-inch desktop. Literally millions of people can't upgrade their setup, because Apple wants to wow us with their next release. And they will succeed and people will pay up to $3,000 and be happy about it. Only revolutionary progress counts.

Companies do make mistakes—hopefully survivable ones. They sometimes introduce ideas that no one asked for and hardly anyone wants such that eventually those ideas are dropped.

An issue for myself and countless others is the absurd infortainment systems in cars. Who the hell asked for this absurdly over complicated digital mess to further complicate something already requiring serious focus as driving? I know of practically no one who likes these things. The fact that all manufacturers are doing it means the consumer has no choice to opt out of it unless they want to buy an older used vehicle.

Apple apparently bypassing a larger iMac is based on reasoning a sizeable (profitable) market for it isn’t there anymore or they’re just not ready to introduce it yet for a myriad of unknown reasons. On the other hand they have introduced products that evidently didn’t pan out as hoped due largely to the asking price: Airpod Max, original Homepod and others whose names escape me for the moment.

There are indeed two sides to this argument. I thought the 24" iMac was better than my 27" intel iMac after using it some time in spite of one step of resolution downgrade (4.5k vs 5K) It was the fact that the memory bandwidth between the SSD and RAM was a lot faster. That test of launching 20 applications at once killed my older intel trying to do the same as the M1 iMac showing it launching all the apps very quickly sequentially. I also see Apple wanting to wow us with their next release rather then provide predictable updates to the iMac as you commented. Yes anyone that hasn't upgraded in awhile sees a large performance boost. I have commented multiple times Apple yanked the 27" iMac as a ploy to launch the Mac Studio as a component solution vs an all-in-one solution.

Except for screen size and graphics performance the M1 iMac is better in every way. But the new larger iMac will become the reference model for the next decade. They don't want to start into a new era with basically the same 5K Retina display, which they introduced in 2014. They rather offer nothing this year and present a 6K XDR iMac next year. Apple really doesn't want to waste too much engineering resources on building what's already possible with todays technology. Only insane over-the-top performance justifies luxury prices in the future.

I think TVOS needs an update. Despite all the updates it gets every year, it's been basically the same thing since the launch of the Apple TV. I would love to see something new, or at least shrink the size of the app icons so more can fit on the top shelf.

It does indeed, especially since the 3rd gen ATV4K its using a A15 (4GB RAM, and now 64GB/128GB storage) we are almost at a point where the tVOS is not allowing the hardware enhanced performance to be utilize the tvOS correctly.

I think they are stalling until LG provides them with a higher res 27" OLED display. Apple saw that mini-LED is great for mobile products, but like LG was with their cheaper QNED Mini-LED 4K TV models, and how low the OLED 4K TV models have fallen this season, they are just biding heir time until the next Mac can use OLEDs. ;)

The new 14" and 16" MacBook Pros are "Liquid Retina XDR Displays" which is a LCD technology that looks as good as OLED. I doubt that Apple will use different display technologies for their notebooks, desktops and monitors. But they might want to use a 6K 32-inch screen like in the Pro Display XDR. Three years after its introduction this display might become cheap enough for the larger professional iMac.

The 14.2-inch Mini-LED screen (Apple calls it Liquid Retina XDR Display) is another highlight and is supposed to be extremely bright.

But that's a 16-inch screen, not 32-inch. The production yield and price of a larger panel are completely different. Imagine how many dead pixel a 254 PPI screen of this size must have at the slightest failure rate.

I don't think anyone expects anything beyond a 5K panel used. The iMac is not a Mac Pro with high end 6K LCD panel w/FALD. A 27" iMac form factor could perhaps fit a 29.5" OLED HDR capable display in the same space. That 6K display is 31.6".

The smaller iMac didn’t need anything more than 4K either, but to achieve Apple’s Retina scaling they needed to maintain a 218 PPI pixel density, no matter how large the display. It’s a mathematical necessity that a 24" Retina iMac has a 4.5K, not just 4K. A 32" iMac must have 6K, not 5K. I’d bet money on that.

I have a set of AirPod Pro's and AirPod Max's, I love both of them. I can't go for long periods of time without my ears becoming sore from in-ear headphones so when I'm on a long flight/traveling the Max's are ideal.
