Top Free iPhone Apps Generate About 80,000 Downloads a Day

Illusion Labs, the makers of the popular free application Labyrinth Lite [App Store], was profiled in BusinessWeek. Illusion Labs started off as a developer for jailbroken iPhones and has since made the transition to the App Store.

Their free version of Labyrinth recently hit the number one spot in the App Store's most downloaded and has since settled at fifth place. Illusion Labs reveals that this popularity translates into approximately 80,000 downloads a day.

The company uses the free application as a 10-level demo version of their $5.99 full version [App Store]. The developers were also responsible for a popular free game called iPint which was commissioned by ad agency Beattie McGuiness Bungary for Carling beer. (The iPint application is currently unavailable in the U.S. App Store)

So is that 80'000 downloads/day downloads at the #1 or #5 spots? Either way it looks fairly good against Download.com for Windows which gets about 250'000 downloads/day in the #1 slot and 60'000 downloads/day in the #5 slot.

I have to admit I installed six off the bat (Twinkle, NY Times, Photobucket, Yelp, Restaurant Nutrition Guide -- which will probably get sacked as its useless, and Showtimes). I guess I'm finally going to put labyrinth on it... why not.

I find it amazing how it got this many downloads, I found it a pretty good fun app, but not worth the price to upgrade to the full version, so I deleted it once I beat the 10 included levels.

Hundreds more. It's definitely worth it if you like the free one, IMO.

I put the free one on my iPod Touch and went to my parents house for the weekend. My stepfather ended up loving it. There is just so much joy that can be had when you give a 65 year old a video game that he can control by moving a screen.

Seriously - it was great fun to watch that.

iPint is excellent. People could care less that the iPhone has GPS and all that, but when they see iPint they laugh and laugh. I mistakenly purchased the iBeer app a few days later and was significantly disappointed. iPint is just quality.

The Full version of labyrinth can just download packs and packs, there is over 200 atm to download, and anymore made are free!

I did, but to be honest, I felt like I was playing a rip-off version of Labyrinth, and there was just something about it that I didn't like, I ended up deleting that too after beating a good amount of levels. If I had to pick one over the other then I would definitely choose Labyrinth.
