I use the "Top Sites" function a lot on my Mac's and about 2 weeks ago it disappeared on my 2011 iMac, it is still present on my rMBP

iMac -- Note that "Show Top Sites" selection is no longer under "Bookmarks"

I have tried to figure this one out -- please help

I have the same problem, but with the Frequently Visited feature. And in my case the Frequently Visited sites show up fine on my iMac but not at all on my rMBP with the same version of the OS. This problem has persisted across multiple OS updates over the last year or so. I've also tried resetting Safari with no luck.

Same for me! It now reflects whatever your new window/tab opening preference is. I was able to fix it by opening safari preferences (cmd comma) and, in the general tab, setting a new tab to open with "top sites". But that means you gotta be cool with opening top site windows now. Dang, apple seems to break so many little things...

*edit*I've played with the options a bit now, and it seems like whenever you pick a new option (either top sites or favorites), it gets sent up to the bookmarks menu bar. For some reason, window/tab selections when they are either favorites or top sites, are linked together for me. Changing one changes the other. Homepage/emptypage/same page does not act this way. Kinda wonky.

Try going to view-> customize toolbar, and dragging in the Top Sites icon. It’s a work around, I know, but that’s probably the best solution at the moment...
