Love my own Cloud at home now with much cheaper off-site backup options available.

Less technical people will opt for Google's plans, more value. Privacy is great, but people also have other more important bills.

I know when I see unannounced rate hikes and features & services cut, I just love it bc ohhh yeaaa I can just feel that sweet sweet market cap, and that's what it's all about. Market cap is my favorite feature, that really makes me want to keep paying a premium every time.

Apple had nothing to do with that. Affirm bought out the company (PayBright) that Apple had partnered with to offer the 0% financing.

Oh, I think I get it... Apple should have stepped in, offered more for PayBright than what Affirm did, and then take over PayBright so Canadians could continue to get 0% financing. Ah, in that case, yes, it's totally 100% Apple's fault.

Damn you, Apple! 😡
Calm down, it was a /s joke

I’m willing to bet the price increase is either an explicative to the EU or to have payment for services such as iCloud‌ Private Relay, Hide My Email, etc. which was offered as free.

I but annoyed since the ability to have other email addresses as aliases can no longer be done. Something I wasn’t aware of until after accepting it.

Check out +addressing, which iCloud supports. It's a handy and automatic way of getting additional addresses.

That's also how Cook turned Apple into a Walmart.

Slowing down the storage of all base models of M2-series to make people to pay for the upgrade is very unprofessional.

Looking forward to his stepping down. Do we have to wait for at least three more years?

Wrong.

If the entry-level M1 had never come with the faster speeds, would the entry-level M2 have been slower? No. #perspective

The M2 is not "slow" by any means. The M1 just had extra value thrown in for free. But current supply constraints likely made that unaffordable to continue to the next generation. Spin it however you like, but there's far more to the story than the CEO trying to force upgrades.

Don’t want to derail the thread too much, but I feel the cost of iCloud has gotten silly, and want out.
How did you set up your HomeCloud?

(I’m really only using iCloud to enable easy sync/accessability of photos and images across devices.)

I have the free iCloud minimum and basically just manually send my photos to my server (unRaid) and delete them from the Apple device.

I can access the photos on my server remotely from anywhere. Backblaze is a good $70/year option for off-site backup of everything.

I forgot my photo stream was even a thing until it got canceled.

The price hike will eventually come to the US too.

None of this works if you have a family and/or kids. My time is better spent elsewhere just using the native iCloud backup and syncing documents/photos and anything else across my family.

Interesting. I have 5 family of varying ages in my household and everything is backed up on a cheap but effective unraid server. I don't want to be beholden to any company with my precious memories. The fact is that Apple services will continue to get more expensive, they have to make more money. Buy a couple cheap HDDs and figure out your own solution.

In my opinion, the automatic could storage is a drawback especially with kids. So many useless pictures. If we get keepers we save those. Don't need 300 pictures of shoes or dinners.

Try to teach your kids to curate their own crap; It ain't easy, I'm working on it myself.

30 inches seems a bit big for 16:9. I would kill for a good 16:10 (or taller!) display in this day and age. Vertical screen real estate is way more valuable for most of the things you do on a computer.

Never heard of iCloud being called automatic cold storage before. Using your own argument, you lose discoverability. You’ll get on device indexing and ML with iCloud. Literally just search shoes or dinner if you want to clean up those images.
