I’m getting a mini 13. I wonder what colors will be available. I will wait until spring if I don’t see a color that knocks me out the way the purple did.

Nothing to buy for me and a lot of other screeching voices.
I have delayed my Apple purchases.

A proper releases date for iOS 15 will do me. I only just brought an new iPhone 11 so upgrading to anything is out of the question.

I was debating getting a 12 Mini but the battery on the 11 is amazing. The other day on a day trip I managed to get 6 hours of GPS navigation and music streaming from the device and at least another 2 hours of using the camera and browser. I had taken it off the charger at 7am and by the time I got home at 8:30pm I still had 20% battery left.

That’s not an everyday use: I do have a wireless charger at work sat on my desk but damn this thing can keep going. Whilst I am sure that the 12 Mini is decent enough the 11 feels like a top Android phone for battery life. I went from a Huawei P20 Pro and that thing went for days.

Ah, but it’s not negligible in bad lighting, which is where most of my photos are taken. Like in restaurants with family and friends.

I also use the ultra wide angle lens to fit everyone into the photo and saw a definite improvement between 12 Pro max and my 11 Pro for that. And there’s still room for improvement so I’m hopeful for such improvements to continue to be made.

Indoor photos of kids and pets seem to always benefit the most from these painfully incremental upgrades.

Photo quality in good lighting hasn’t really changed much in years and indeed sometimes seems to take a step back here and there in some circumstances. My original iPhone SE’s outdoor photos can still stand up against photos taken with more recent and expensive iPhones.

Also that post was talking about the leap from regular to the pro features. Regular phones don’t have the optical zoom.
True true. You do have have me there. I still think the differences are too small to justify the cost of the upgrade expensive as phones are these days. Now the LEO satellite feature would be incredible. I live in the mountains of East Tennessee and spend (what little free time I have as a medical student) in the mountains hiking, mountain biking, etc, in areas with little to no service. I would immediately upgrade to the 13 Pro for that. Otherwise, watch series 7 for me this year.

Been waiting and looking forward to September for a few months now.

Finally decided to upgrade from my trusty clamshell and join the modern world.

iphone13 pro is my choice.

I see a few comments for the LEO Satellite communication protocol but really just think how often you would need to use it. Personally I cannot recall a time when I needed to use my phone and had no signal.

For me I would rather introduce technologies like this through a linked device which could have the suggested and limited communication constraints or even better, in combination with the iPhone provide full sat phone capabilities.

As a linked device then it could perhaps be compatible with older iPhone models too.

Once the user (market) desired features are clear then perhaps embed this feature with the iPhone.

You do certainly make a very good point. I think you’ve got your head on straight regarding your upgrade decisions.

I don’t get very good coverage where I live, either, so any improvements Apple has to offer would be very welcome.

For me, in recent years the drive to upgrade has also been a bit influenced by my stage of life, too. I have been preoccupied with elder care for parents and in-laws and that influences my views. I’m definitely not making the same decisions I would have made in my 30’s with other priorities in my budget and decades of health and activity ahead of me. At 55, (and unfortunately with health issues piling on) I want to play with all the phones I can before I physically can’t use them anymore.

Don’t get me wrong, I know there are plenty of people in their 80’s who can use these things just fine, my dad being one of them. I’m not trying to generalize against people over a certain age. I’m speaking for my situation only. My mom and dad are only a year apart in age, but my mom has become horrifically disabled by the autoimmune diseases that are already starting to plague me.

The weight and dimensions and balance of the iPhone 12 Pro surprised me with hand pain already. I could not use that phone without horrible nerve and joint pain. I’m actually able to grip the larger 12 Pro max better. And of course the 12 mini is fine, too. That whole experience of having to return my Pro due to the hand pain really…it was so unexpected. I’m really strong and active and I couldn’t hold that little phone up.

But even this year, I’m not chomping at the bit to upgrade from my 12 Pro Max, at least not based on what we know at the moment. I’m keeping an open mind though. And I’ll be honest, I may see a color that blows my mind and boom, sold! I probably should feel sheepish about that. Lol but I don’t! 🤣

Oh and best wishes to you on your studies!

This was a very long week. Glad it’s finally September. Best month of the year is finally here.

Highly expecting the invites to go out for iPhone event on Tuesday, September 07, 2021 at 10:00AM PST.

Happy Labor Day weekend yall (People in the USA). 🇺🇸
Oh yikes, that's tomorrow...and I might actually be able to listen to it.

I'm also holding off on new Apple devices, and for the same reason that you are. Normally, I am a lot more excited about new Apple announcements, but this time around, I find it hard to be thrilled.

I'm not in the market for a new phone yet anyway because I just bought a 12 Max Pro Super Duper Alakazam Inky Binky Bottle of Ink just about 8 or 10 months ago. Oh yeah, is there a "plus" in there somewhere too?

But seriously, it's really a shame, because it's almost always the camera that gets me to upgrade the phone. And with Apple wanting to snoop on every Apple customer, use of the camera just makes me think I'd be raising my risk of a false accusation. And since I broadly oppose most of Apple's ideology, I think that could put me at even greater risk of a frame-up. There, I said it.

I wish I could just be Apple's happy customer and they could just be my happy device provider, but with each new news article, it's starting to seem less and less of a workable arrangement. So if Apple proceeds with their hashplans, then I might just start carrying a separate camera with me for a couple years and then change to Android phone whenever it's time to replace the 12 Max Pro with a newer/better device.

Or maybe I'll have a look at the new Samsung folding phone and/or tablet devices. I hear they're quite impressive, and at least with Android, I could have a better chance of being in better control of what's going on with my devices. And I AM a techie, of course; have been ever since I learned how to program my TI-30 calculator in high school, lol!

I'm very sad that Apple's predilections to snoop on customers has put me into the position of actually thinking about moving to Android. But that's what they have done, and that makes me feel not so excited for whatever Apple might be announcing tomorrow or even later this year.

I do want to buy a new iPad 12" and a MacBook Pro 16" M-whatever, with $1500 saved up for the former and about $3500 saved up for the latter. But again, the CSAM thing has me waiting. This is what will hurt both Apple and me. Apple doesn't earn my money and I might have to forego Apple's great devices and decent ecosystem. That too makes me sad.

I just don't want my device maker to be acting as an arm of the government by being a de-facto law enforcement agency. That would just make them another arm of my government, and I don't trust my government to do the right thing. There are SO MANY cases of people going to jail for not having committed a crime.

I don't want Apple joining hands with my government and trying to control me even more than my government already does on its own.

So I might watch the announcements tomorrow. Or I might be looking at some Samsungs. We'll see how I feel.

Sorry to hear about the health stuff, but keep fighting and most importantly, make good decisions about the things with your health you can control, like what goes in your mouth! I will certainly tell patients and already do in clinicals the best treatment is prevention. Live well, live long (Generally speaking!).

As far as the phones, yeah, if they come out with some great colors, I may have to splurge but really, that LEO satellite feature would be such a useful feature for so many, and a first on a smartphone as far as I am aware. If not, the Watch Series 7 with cellular would be great as I ride and bike through town as well and staying connected to my wife and daughters without having to carry my phone would be nice.
