I'd rather Apple be mature about it instead of trying to "stick it the EU". That's elementary-school stuff.
too late, Apple already set the precedent. who would ever choose to update the connector without the appropriate technology? the EU is the one doing elementary-school stuff.

Strange the biggest feature for iOS 16.1 hasn’t been named.

The new battery drain is incredible!!

Even on legacy hardware such as my iPhone 11 it only takes a 2-3 hours before its empty!

Having to recharge my phone at least thrice a day really makes it feel like I’ve gotten a new phone!

They didnt confirmed iphone with usbC...they just confirmed iphones without lightning...so we still can get port-less iphones

No, they didn't mention anything about it not being lightning or it being typeC or anything else. They only said they will have to comply, which means wide range of things. At the most they switching to typeC and at the least they removing the port all together and it could be anything in between.

USB-C iPhone is not confirmed. They said they will ”comply”. There is also nothing requiring them to switch USB-C in the iPhone 15. Apple can legally wait until iPhone 16 (2024) to do anything and by then they may just go portless which might be their version of malicious compliance.
The question can they afford it? The rules get in to effect in October.

Will apple risk missing that deadline?
The iPhone 12 Pro Max was launched in November
Same with iPhone X
iPhone XR was launched late October

iPhone SE(3d generation) was launched in march this year.

It would be risk losing a whole year of iPhone sales, refitting millions of iPhones if the deadline is missed for the benefit of selling lightning for 1 extra year.

The law states the USB-IF standard will be used. And currently it’s the USB port Type C. Not the protocol. In the law it’s already made so the standard will change without any need to amend the law or vote.

There is no in between.
If they have a port it must be USB type C port compatible with USB power delivery.

Or they have no port at all

How so? The deadline plays perfectly with Apple’s own release schedule. There is no risk here. If the rules go into effect October 2024, they announce iPhone 16 in September 2024 with USB-C or with no port and Qi charging only. They can ship it whenever. I don’t see a situation where they are missing a whole year of sales. Only a month at most (and EU only) which would be filled with pre-orders anyway. There is plenty of time to plan this out and iPhone 15 in 2023 can still ship with lightning with zero risk.

Nope. Apple had it coming. They have a monopoly on selling iOS based phones and they misused it long enough to sell consumers a vastly inferior connector.

I‘m not a fan of the EU, but it’s good they put a stop to it.

I was thinking about the rumored removal of the volume and power buttons and just realized something - the new force sensors on the AirPods Pro 2 could be the precursor to it.

Nobody is suggesting the volume and power buttons will be removed.

What’s been rumoured is that they will change from a mechanical mechanism to a solid-state mechanism with haptic feedback, similar to the trackpad on MacBooks.

This, presumably, will improve reliability and waterproofing, while also hopefully giving a better “click feel” to the buttons.

It may also reduce accidental presses, like when your phone is squeezed into a tight pocket!

what will probably happen is that Apple will put USB C 3.1 in the pro version and USB C 2.0 in the regular iphone in the first year and then put UB C 3.1 for both phones in the following year.

To add this into the confusion, there are USB C cables that will support USB 3.1 speeds but can't support high speed charging, and some will only support USB 2.0 speeds with high speed charging.

I don’t wanna shoot hundreds of GBs of ProRes Raw and then have to copy it via Lightning at USB 2 speeds or over the wire. Give me a fast USB 3 port please.

Absolutely not an inferior connector. I don't understand the tech behind what makes it bad or superior, but none of the original cable connectors ever failed. I never had to adjust the cable/connector for iPhones/iPad to detect it would always detect in one shot. Same I can't say for the third-party ones though. I used one of the original cables till it frayed away several inches but the connector still performed as new.

And, just to be clear, I'm not a fan of any connector, give me lightning or USBC, but just let it be a universal one, that would make life easier for everyone.

thats not how the rule works. They can announce it whenever they want. What's important is when it's launched.

And if they launched the iPhone 16 in September it can use lightning, but if iPhone 16 pro max is launched in October it would have to use USB-C or no port at all.

Apple has at multiple occasions had late launch dates

well it’s inferior as it’s not capable to have faster speeds. Too few pins to mak it future proof beyond usb 3.0

I think you are assuming Apple would try to sneak in lightning on the iPhone 16 right before the deadline. I don't think they will. I said they will do something different for the 16, wether it is USB-C or Qi charging only. The entire lineup announced in September 2024 and shipping September or October will comply with the EU rule.

The iPhone 15 on the other hand is quite safe for them to launch with lightning next year.

I was talking about connector only, not its capabilities. Lightning capabilities are pathetic compared to what others provide.

To add this into the confusion, there are USB C cables that will support USB 3.1 speeds but can't support high speed charging, and some will only support USB 2.0 speeds with high speed charging.

All USB-C cables support at least 60W (3A 20V) charging.

Using the right cable can be a consideration when charging a Pro laptop, but you don’t have to worry about it when charging an iPhone. Even the biggest “Pro Max” iPhones peak at around 27W during charging - so 60W is far more than any iPhone will ever consume!

I have ran across some that does not (or claim that they do not support high speed / high power charging). For me, I only stick with brand names and higher quality cables but some will miss it. I think the MFI certification helps minimize the confusion.
