I got the impression in this article that the rumor suggests the new iMac Pro (or whatever they call it) will get an M2, but isn’t the prevailing rumor that that device will get an M1 Max with more cores?
I've been seeing a lot of M2 rumors that don't make much sense to me. Wouldn't they finish the transition from Intel before starting a new generation? The only three models that make sense for March are:

Low-end MacBook Pro w M1 Pro
Redesigned Mac mini w/ M1 Pro/Max
Redesigned Mac mini w/ M1 - fewer ports would yield a different model number

“One of the new Macs listed in the database is described as a "portable" computer, suggesting that it will be a MacBook of some kind.”

Or, more likely, it’s the battery-powered Mini I’ve been waiting for! Like a MacBook, but without attached screen and keyboard.

I would expect a battery-powered Mac mini is not going to happen, but you could get a jump on a battery bank that matches the footprint of the Mac mini...

A 12” M series MB would be amazing! I’m sure that there are a lot of people who would be excited to see the 12” MB make a comeback. It would be an instant purchase for me. ?

I still say the 13" MBA & 13" MBP will both be axed, to be replaced by the newly designed MacBook, maybe Apple offers both 12" & 14" models...?

M1 Pro/Max are going to be more powerful than an entry-level M2 SoC...

It is worse, all rumours combined make no sense at all....

Apple building out the higher end with M1 based SoCs while also releasing M2s on the lower end, one of them even in a product that not only looks dated today but also makes no sense at all to stay in the lineup.

Apple needs to complete the initial transition to Apple silicon with the M1/Pro/Max/Dual Max SoCs before moving on to the M2-based SoCs...!

Thats usually the case with rumors, the earliest ones have some plausibility, but as soon as people think that their personal product wish list is whats going to happen they get proven wrong.

Just waiting on the Mac mini in my sig... ;^p

This needs to happen, all Macs on M1-based SoCs before the M2-based SoCs are released...!

Low-end MacBook Pro w M1 Pro

Doubtful, I expect a new-design 14" MacBook (maybe even a 12" model) to represent the "low-end" of the Mac laptop line-up...

Redesigned Mac mini w/ M1 Pro/Max

Yes, please...!

Redesigned Mac mini w/ M1 - fewer ports would yield a different model number

M1 Mac mini has two USB-A & two TB3/USB-C ports right now, highly doubtful Apple would offer less ports than that...?

I have a 2019 base i7 6-core MBP 16".

And just got me a brand new 2020 M1 MacBook Air, 8-core GPU, purchased on the Apple Store website.

Both machines have 16GB of RAM and 512GB of SSD.

I'm surprised that, on my tests on a Handbrake "x265 preset=slower RF=15" encoding, my 2019 i7 MBP 16" outperforms the M1 MBA by a margin of around 20% in speed, both machines tested with a 30cm fan at maximum speed pointed directly towards the MBP or MBA trying to cool it down.

The MBA speakers are very bad, of course I expected them to be worse than the ones on my 2019 MBP 16", but it's even worse than what I expected, I'm really disapointed.

Overall, I don't think the M1 MBA is a good 2019 MBP 16" replacement, I guess I could live with the smaller screen (13.3" vs 16"), but the horrible MBA speakers make it very dificult.

My 2019 i7 MBP 16" is still a great machine and I really like the Touch Bar, I customize it with a "Show Desktop" button, it's very useful.

Not excited about the MBA redesign if it will make it more expensive while still keeping the horrible speakers and make it lose the wedge shape which I really love and is one of its best advantages imo.

- Rumors are a new entry-level MacBook Pro to replace the 13" M1 model. The released model numbers confirm one is a laptop. That's all I was alluding to. I don't actually know if it will be a MBP, I only suspect it won't have M2 yet.

- Mac mini - not fewer ports, just the same number as the current M1 Mac mini but in the redesigned chassis would be one model number. Then the M1 Pro/Max version with more ports would be the last model number.

The basis to the two model numbers for Mac mini is that the M1 iMac has two model numbers, one for the two USB-C ports version and one for the four. I suspect if they redesign the Mac mini, as is rumored, they wouldn't just change it for the high-end model but rather both.

So next month we would get:
- MacMini M1Pro
- MacMini M1Max
- (small chance) 24" iMac M1Pro

While that is the most plausible prediction I wouldn't rule out anything.

It is possible (while not likely) that Apple does have something M2 ready either based on A15 or even as an in between A15 and A16. This might even include bigger versions in line with the Pro/Max monikers.

As a result we could see:
- MacMini M2Pro
- MacMini M2Max
- MacBook 14" M2 (replacing the non-Pro 13" Pro)

M2 based updates for the 27" iMac and MacPro to follow in summer.

Again: "possible (while not likely)"

It’s funny that whenever Apple gestures about pricing hardware lower than their incredibly inflated price structure, it’s seen as Apple doing something for the benefit of their customers.

I really like Apple products but I feel their prices on even the most basic hardware is abusive toward the brand’s loyal customers. For example, the HDMI dongle for the iPad that costs $70. Yeah you can of course buy third-party products but to many people, they only really trust the Apple brand, so they’ll begrudgingly pay those crazy prices.
