Apple Event Announced for March 8: 'Peek Performance'

Apple this week announced that it will be holding a virtual event on Tuesday, March 8 at 10 a.m. Pacific Time. The event has the tagline "Peek Performance" and will be streamed on Apple.com and on YouTube.

We've got a thorough guide and video of our expectations for the event, which include a third-generation iPhone SE and a fifth-generation iPad Air that are both expected to gain a faster A15 chip and 5G support, along with other new features. At least one new Mac with Apple silicon is also expected to be announced.

Also be sure to check out the latest episode of The MacRumors Show, where Dan, Hartley, and Sami share their thoughts on the upcoming event.

MacRumors will have live coverage of the "Peek Performance" event, which will kick off what is poised to be a busy 2022 for Apple.

What Not to Expect at Next Week's Apple Event

While there have been several rumors about what to expect at Apple's event next week, there are also a handful of products that are unlikely to launch until later this year or next year.

We've put together a list of products that are unlikely to be announced at Apple's event next week, such as second-generation AirPods Pro, which are instead rumored to launch in the fourth quarter of 2022.

Last-Minute 5G iPhone SE Details Leaked By Reliable Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo

Renowned Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has shared six "predictions" for the third-generation iPhone SE, providing several new insights into details about the device.

Repeating information from previous rumors, Kuo claims that the third-generation iPhone SE will feature the same design as the current model, the A15 Bionic chip, and 5G connectivity, but there are several new details, including a bump in the maximum storage capacity to 256GB, the same black, white, and red colors as the current model, and 5G support for both mmWave and sub-6GHz networks.

Will Apple Keep the Old iPhone SE Around at a Lower Cost?

The new ‌iPhone SE‌ is expected to be priced at $399 and it will be replacing the current ‌iPhone SE‌, but will Apple keep the older model around and drop the price as it sometimes does when new iPhones come out?

In his weekly Power On newsletter, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman suggested that Apple could potentially keep the 2020 ‌iPhone SE‌ around, dropping the price to somewhere around $199.

I’ve been waiting on this event since before Christmas but I’m going to miss it becI have an appointment that evening. Does anyone know if it will be uploaded to the Apple website quickly? Would it be the same day? Is there anywhere else I could watch it later?

Events are usually streamed live then made available for On Demand streaming a few hours later. Personally I doubt we will see much. The hype has been click bait, but the event will likely be a let down.

At least we are all waiting for this event to happen so we can figure out more accurately how the rest of the year will go for Apple. The event artwork is suggestive of things in different colors. :)

Peek performance...

A sneak peek at the new Mac Studio headless desktop system...!

Mac Studio = Cube 2.0

Mac Studio will replace the high-end 2018 Intel Mac mini, bridging the gap between the (new smaller design) Mn-series Mac mini and the full tower Mac Pro...

Mac Studio will go from a base single M1 Pro SoC model all the way up to a dual M1 Max SoC model:
  • Base model - 8/14, 16/512, Gigabit Ethernet, US$1.4k
  • Fully loaded model - 20/64, 128/8T, dual 10Gb Ethernet, US$7k
Four TB4/USB4 (USB-C) ports & two USB 3.1 Gen2 (USB-A) ports on the single SoC models...
Single Gigabit Ethernet standard on single SoC models, upgrade to 10Gb Ethernet is US$100...

Six TB4/USB4 (USB-C) ports & four USB 3.1 Gen2 (USB-A) ports on the dual SoC models...
Dual Gigabit Ethernet standard on dual SoC models, upgrade to dual 10Gb Ethernet is US$200...

Sorry to disagree but it will be its own separate product category IMHO. Something more then the base $699 to $1099 Mac mini line but less expensive than the $5000 Mac Pro base is a very wide gap. The fact that you can add needless options to a intel Mac mini is irrelevant, you're still stuck with 2 intel processor options. (i5 6 core or i7 6 core).

If anything that intel Mac mini needs a update to something better. Whatever they do it will indicate whether Apple will continue to support intel on the more affordable Macs. ;)

Yes, which is why it is given a entirely new name, Mac Studio...

Which this new product category Mac Studio can fill, with a product line starting with the M1 Pro SoC and reaching it's peak with a dual M1 Max SoC model; pricing from $1.4k to $7k...

The 2018 Intel Mac mini is irrelevant, as it will be retired soon...

Like the all-new Mac Studio, aka Cube 2.0...?!? ;^p

Apple will be showing a preview of the new Mac Pro, a computer so performant that it needs to be cooled with PEAK antifreeze. :p

The only things that can get me excited are the announcements of a new Macbook Air based on the M2 and of a new iMac Pro. Everything else seems extremely boring to me, especially the iPhone SE and the iPad Air.
The new Mac Studio would only be interesting if Apple also makes a new Apple Display available at the same time. Even then, I would prefer an iMac..
I wouldn't get my hopes up that Apple will announce the new MacBook Air or the new iMac this March. Both products will probably come out in November.

Gurman just said
I also wouldn’t rule out Apple previewing its next-generation external display. I’m told Apple actually completed work on it months ago, and the device was due to launch soon after last year’s MacBook Pro. Apple’s last in-house monitor came in 2019 alongside the Intel Mac Pro. A monitor would also explain the “peek” spelling.”

“I don’t believe the new iMac Pro or Mac Pro are ready to go on sale imminently, but perhaps Apple wants to preview at least one of those machines ahead of a release a little later this year.”
