I am having trouble with my 2007 Macbook pro. The trackpad and keyboard are unresponsive often, as it seems to happen randomly. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. If I take the battery out though it always works which I find odd. The apple store told me I need a new topcase... but isn't it more likely it is just a faulty ribbon cable? Thanks!

Just replace your battery. It's probably starting to expand and push on the underside of your trackpad/track button.

It also may be slowly disconnecting the keyboard ribbon cable. That's under the plastic box under the battery

That's why when it's running without battery it's fine. Yay
