Hello,

I am not a fan of the notch on my new MacBook Pro, and I came across this app topnotch that totally hides it. It looks so much better with the black menu bar. I can’t believe Apple wouldn’t give us this option. They’ll hide the notch in their own marketing photos, but the consumer doesn’t even get a choice.. I really hope it comes in a software update

In the mean time I’d like to keep using this app, but I am wondering if anybody smarter than I can comment on it. I can be a little weary of running third party programs from developers I’ve never heard of. Is the developer reputable? Is this app going to send by private information somewhere, or will it be a memory or cpu hog, create security issues, etc? Anything to worry about?

Thank you!

Lol they don't hide the notch in their marketing photos

Well, you're right, I'd say they don't completely hide it, but you know they also didn't want a white part of that wallpaper under it. I'd say they did a pretty good job concealing it for this one

They've been doing this in marketing photos since the first iPhones with the notch came out. The abstract colors which are always conveniently mostly black right around the notch.

Topnotch is what i'm getting when my new MBP comes in. The pictures I've seen look good and I'm a total notch hater...

How to make the notch disappear: Take it up a notch; work in "Dork Mode"
(completely black desktop background). What notch?

Less dorky would be to create a Photoshop template with a top black edge where you can just drop your new wallpaper and export. Et voila

I’d prefer this solution rather then running another random piece of software. Crowd
my menubar further and add a point of failure to the system? No thank you

Even better would be to code a bash script that applies the edge for you in a few secs. I am sure it’s achievable with something like ImageMagick

You can also use this app - similar to TopNotch but also has the option to round the corners a bit: https://goodsnooze.gumroad.com/l/nASbe?ref=producthunt
You beat me to it! Developer of Forehead is very well known and the App Store has highlighted his app Soosee several times.

I wonder if disabling transparencies in the Accessibility options will make your menu bar totally dark.
I've done that since the MacOS added transparencies, so long I don't even remember which . So my menu bar, menus and dock have been solid ever since.

Nice, I may check that one out too, but I'm actually totally satisfied with the right desktop picture, I basically can't see it now, and would like to avoid running unnecessary software.

Forehead (free): Besides letting you switch between your default wallpaper and a black notchless one, Forehead includes options to round the corners of the screen, similar to the rounded top corners of the new MacBook Pros. The ability to simulate a notch on older Macs is coming in an update.
lol wow.

I've tried it, it doesn't make it completely black though :(

Even setting the background to a total black, doesn't change the menu bar to a black that matches the notch.

I tried reducing transparency and had the same problem, it's kind of a dark grey that shows the notch easily.

But with the photo I used for my background, it sort of fades to black at the top from very dark blue, and I can only see the notch if I really look closely for it. I did not try just a plain black background though, I wonder why it's not working for you.
