I had been looking for an iPhone 8+ all along and then someone said that I should splurge the extra 2-300$ and get an X.

I'm mainly wanting a bigger and more responsive phone with better camera/video capability.
I want something that'll fit reasonably well in my pocket.
Battery life is also important to me.
Glass on X scares me, I don't want any accidents - I want a sturdy phone (I plan on getting a case).
Sometimes, I'm also contemplating getting a 7+ or even an SE for its great battery life.
I currently own a 5s.

What has been your justification for getting your 7/8/X/whatever.
Thanks ... hope youall are enjoying your shiny phones 🙂

8+ in Apple Leather for slim.
8+ in Magpul for protection.
Both fit in back pocket.
I don’t carry phones in front pocket.
In Apple Leather it fits in the cell phone pocket in shorts like Volcom.

Badass camera. Zoom not worth it on either (OIS only does so much)
I don’t care about portrait selfies.
8+ super fast. Gorgeous screen with blue, not purple skies.

Nice giraffe.

IMO, the camera on 8+ is considerably better than 7+. Worth the $. ..but again.. don’t count on much from zoom lenses.

- Same chip means similar performance. Gestures-heavy UI on iPhone X makes it feel at least 30% faster than 8/8+.

- X will be more comfortable in pocket, but I didn't have any issues with 7+ after years of smaller phones, and originally sticking with a 6/6S. For me, the screen size and battery benefits of Plus outweighs the minor size cost.

- 8/8+ and X has same amount of glass front and back. no advantage on either here.

Play with both in-store, and see which one feels more right to you. Since you're coming from 5S, 8+ may be a huge shock, but it's something you'll probably get used to quickly. However, if you really are not comfortable with phablet, X is a good compromise between screen size approaching 8+ capabilities, while maintaining small form factor.

True about coming from 5S. Unless you WANT the Plus the X has excellent balance in the hand. It’s not for me but just objective.

Get the X....if you can land one

My battery is much better after a few days use and it may not top my plus but it's close enough for the loss in heft.

I was a plus fan and still am, will 100% up to an Xs Plus if released next year. However after using the X for around 10 days now I can't see using a phone with those huge bezels and a screen smaller in diameter than the X.

My vote would be take a trip to Apple and play with both and see what YOU like, not what we like. Honestly the X is a pain to get right now, and the 8plus can be had with zero headaches in store. It's going to come down to what works for you.

I think the 8 Plus is fairly large to carry in the pocket, where I think the X would be more manageable to carry with the smaller form factor. If you plan on using a case, that would assist with the fragility of the iPhone X and add some protection.

I personally would opt for the X if it's in your financial interest, it has the latest camera specifications and the battery life is very good on the X.

If you're spending the 8 Plus money I suggest you to spend a little bit more to get the X. Totally different beast. My 7+ instantly feels very old and the forehead and chin are suddenly so big. The X's design cannot be unseen.

Thank you all - yeah it will be either an 8+ or X depending on its availability and feel. I'll visit an Apple store ... I am leaning towards the X mainly due to the extra bulk/size of the 8+. As it seems now, I'll probably not get an X before Xmas or even before the end of the year.

So how does a video file render on the X, especially with the slight notch/dip at the top of the screen?

What would be a recommended case for the X please?

For pocketability the x wins.

For a less quirky/familiar ux, based on all the threads here, the 8+ is the way to go.

They have almost identical intervals and cameras on the back.

Imo, because of the notch, if you’re the type to watch a lot of videos the “full screen” experience on the plus is hands down a better experience also.

I’d suggest going to the Apple store and checking both out and seeing for yourself. Don’t just go by the spec sheet.

Today I saw a colleague's iPhone 6+ in an Otterbox case. It's huge, and heavy, relative to my iPhone 5s.
It was not very convenient in my front jeans pocket, I'm sure I'd find it uncomfortable driving with it -lol-
I should visit an Apple Store and see an 8/8+, and an X. Hopefully they're relatively more ergonomic.

Otterbox is so unnecessarily over the top.
Leather case is great. The biggest I’ll personally go is Magpul

Regardless of case the Plus isn’t a front jeans pocket device. Now shorts pockets (RVCA, Volcom, Quicksilver, etc) is fine.

What can the X do better than the 8+? Nothing.

To everyone who is going to say I'm wrong, think about what I said... I didn't say what can it do differently, I said what can it do BETTER? Nothing. iOS is iOS no matter what device you use it on.

In this case I'd say go with the 8+ over the X... You lose a slight size comparison with the 8+ but you gain much more.

Reasons why the 8+ beats the X:

Better screen (in my opinion)
More usable screen
Much much better battery life
Touch ID is much more convenient than Face ID in most situations
Apps work better
Not a beta test/very refined experience

Anyone who says the battery and screen are the same as a Plus is lying.

Get the 8+ and a case from here buypeel.com. Slimmest case ever. Wont even feel it. Front pants pocket approved.

I Like OtterBox, but only for the most rugged protection. Their cases are just too thick and heavy to use. And the difficulty with Otterbox is even getting the cases off the iPhone, would you have to be careful with.

I happened to visit an Apple store and overall the entire iPhone 8 line is awesome!
Especially X, it has a solid feel and a very crisp screen. The lack of home button would be something getting used to. A notch for a $1150 iPhone looks awkward. While I understand that a bunch of folks ignore it, I find it cheap and distracting (and consider it borderline inexcusable design flaw).

The iPhone 8+ is also nice, although a bit big. Without a case, it nicely fit into my jeans front pocket. I'll definitely need a case though.

The iPhone 8 had the most comfortable feel in my hand. What's tempting is the better dual lenses, nice screen on the X.

Both the X, and iPhone 8 are a bit taller and a bit wider than my current 5s.

Needless to say, I'm still torn between the 3. I should say, 4, if I include SE 128, which is still high on my list.

Thanks everyone for your invaluable opinions, feedback 🙂

I bought a used 7 plus and I’m happy. I do wish I could’ve gotten an 8 plus and probably could have if I would’ve waited. Maybe even got the X.

Consider the 8+. Apple got the battery life spot on both the 8 and 8+. Do glad I chose the 8. The best iPhone for me so far. The design is refined and it’s a familiar phone which I willingly paid $1000 for.
