Hi,

Even before I upgraded my mac pro the machine randomly freezed. Especially when running FCP. After the cpu upgrade and gtx670 I have this freezes a lot more. I tried to type this message two times and before I could finish the mac totally stopped. No mouse or keyboard action. I even had a total shut down yesterday.

As far as I can see everything works fine. CPU is around 30 degrees celsius.

What could be the problem? I'm doing a rember test now to see if the ram is failing.

I do have a intensity pro card and a wacom tablet attached to the machine.

Run Apple Hardware Test first, it could also be a corrupt system or HD failing, look at the smart status in Disk Utility, but it just gives you an indication, run Verify disk if there are any errors and repair permissions, also a good idea is to make a new User Account and login into that account (Logout of normal User Account), see if the problems persist there.

Thanks,

No problems with the drives as far as I can see. Hardware test doesn't start up. Perhaps I have to swap the graphics card for that. Back to the original 4870.

ps after reading some info: Can a Corsair GT SSD cause these freezes? It's up to firmware 5.02. I think no trim enabled

What's the freeze look like?

Does everything on your screen stop in place (even the clock)?

My 2008 iMac did this running any OS from 10.6.8 thru 10.8.2. All I could do was roll back to Leopard 10.5.8 to have stability.

I'm really hoping the Pros don't suffer from this same mysterious freeze problem.

Total freeze of the desktop. No mouse or keyboard control. I think iTunes kept playing. No audible changes in fan behavior. One time a total shut down. No notification or panic reports.

Well I did a SMC reset again and edited in FCP X for a few hours. No problems detected. Let's hope it stays this way.

Hi Pjotr28. Try to keep a log and record what activities or apps you are using whenever a freeze happens. In my case whenever there freezes happens, after keeping record of my activities, the culprit was Firefox browser which always causes processing to hang.

Few weeks further. Still having random freezes. Now two in a hour working with FCP X. Sometimes there is a log messages. Like shown below. Can't make anything out of it.

Few weeks further. Still having random freezes. Now two in a hour working with FCP X. Sometimes there is a log messages. Like shown below. Can't make anything out of it.

panic(cpu 2 caller 0xffffff7fab00f7f2): NVRM[0/5:0:0]: Read Error

I was getting this till I replaced my 7300 which had some bad RAM on it. I guess you might be in the same boat. Do you have another card to try out?

Graphics related crash.

Generally the only thing that will cause my system (10.6.8) to totally freeze like that is the game Team Fortress 2. Usually when this happens (screen totally frozen, no response to mouse/keyboard) I can still SSH into the Mac Pro and the "WindowServer" process is in a "stuck" state. Holding down the power button is the only fix.

However lately I've had it freeze twice while using Remote Desktop. These times I couldn't even SSH into the box so I'm not sure if it was the WindowServer again or not...

I just had one while FCP X was exporting. Screen went black. Thought it was energy saver. But it was a reboot. Very annoying. First have to find another card before I can send the GTX to the reseller.

Total freeze of the desktop. No mouse or keyboard control. I think iTunes kept playing. No audible changes in fan behavior. One time a total shut down. No notification or panic reports.

I wonder if this could also be a power draw issue? The GTX 670 isn't very "green" when working and your symptom description sounds a lot like what I get on my system when the GTX570 hits full draw. Try playing an HD youtube at the same time you run Furmark in 1080p Full Screen (with AA OFF - which draws more power for some reason) and see if it's repeatable. If it is there's a pretty good chance it could be a power supply issue. Not to say that your PSU is bad but rather it's just too small for the job.

Hi,

Thanks, tried this on dual monitors. Display one Furmark. Display two youtube. For half an hour no crashes. Only the fan noise was increasing

Is there another way to test the card?

As the problems started after changing card and cpu. Could a full new install of mountain lion be usefull?

It could well be Graphic drivers bus, the better way to test out if it is indeed GPU drivers is to install a different OS, so if you can install SL or Lion I would try this first, that is, if you have that version OS X.

But a clean ML install also might resolve issues.

It seems to me that GPU drivers aren't that good "lately".

Hi back again,

After having occasional freezes I've now had 5 in a row. Working on FCP X. No heavy cpu load. And it happens randomly for example when using Safari.
It's hot in Holland. Above thirty degrees celsius. But the highest temp in the mac is 44 degrees.
What do you guys think. Graphic card? I should find me an used one to find out.

I read that an EVGA gtx680 is working in a Mac Pro with boot screen. Can I get the same problem with this card? For example drawing to much power?
