Although I an not a newbie to the iPhone or to jailbreaking I am when it comes to knowing how to actually hack. I always thought that the jailbreak was a software hack so why does it make a difference what chip the device has installed? How does the hack have to go through the chip?

Yes, some JB's need a deep hardware exploit to the inject the code but other ones like userland exploits just need a hole in the software.
