Hey guys, for those in CA i was wondering what the total price including tax and everything will be for both the 16 and 32 3gs

You pay tax on the unsubsidized cost of the iPhone regardless of how much you are actually buying it for. Sales tax is different all over California, but I'm going to use Kern County sales tax as an example. Our sales tax is 8.25%, yours may be different.

Tax for 16GB iPhone = $49.42
Tax for 32GB iPhone = $57.68

If you are eligible for full discount pricing, your cost is:

16GB: $199 + $49.42 = $248.42 (24.83% sales tax)
32GB: $299 + $57.68 = $356.68 (19.29% sales tax)

If you are eligible for partial discounted pricing, your cost is:

16GB: $399 + $49.42 = $448.42 (12.39% sales tax)
32GB: $499 + $57.68 = $556.68 (11.56% sales tax)

If you are buying the phone out right:

16GB: $599 + $49.42 = $648.42 (8.25% sales tax)
32GB: $699 + $57.68 = $756.68 (8.25% sales tax)

My receipt shows 11.56% sales tax, so don't be alarmed if yours does too.

I just preordered a 32gb, and I live in CA. I ended up paying about 350 after tax, the percentage was like 19.7% or something really high. I have no idea why it was so much higher than normal, maybe becuase it counts as a luxury item?

Is it really that hard to add *whatever percent CA tax is* times 2 or times 3?

I can't figure out what you mean. 8.25% sales tax and multiply it by 2 or 3? What?

thank you!!! that was very helpful. all i needed was this post

I live in Ca where the tax is 8.25 and i ordered it from AT&T website. The total was only $317.

Are they going to charge the rest later or something? My confirmation email already says that its $317.

I paid $251 for the 16GB model. Tax is paid on the unsubsidized cost of the phone. Also don't forget to factor in the one-time activation costs -- $36 for the first phone and $26 for additional phones.

Really? That seems very strange. I paid $251 like the above poster.

I don't necessarily mind paying the tax on the unsubsidized phone if that is the rule in California (I don't mind making some sacrifices to live here), but when some people are paying different tax amounts on the same product from the same site in the same state, that seems a little bit not right.

I was charged $53.91 which is exactly 9% (sales tax in my county) of the $599 unsubsidized price of the 16GB. I wasn't aware that they charge sales tax on the unsubsidized price so it was a bit of a surprise. Activation was $18 for my existing line. And then $36 for a new dock. Adds up quickly. =/

lmao you wasted your money, $700+ for a phone? LMAO, you must be single.

Ah- I thought you pay the sales tax on the subsidized price- My mistake.

I was saying, 8.25 times 2 for the 16GB (Since it's 200$- it'll be $16.50) or 8.25 times 3 if it's 32GB

Ohh, okay, because the prices are divisible by 100. I understand now. :D

Jesus. You have to pay tax on the unsubsidized price? That's double taxation since you also pay tax on the service. Unreal.

Hmm, I'm wondering how you got the tax on the unsubsidized price.

I just ordered the 32GB White from Apple.com and payed $314.99 (Tax is 5% in VA)

I live in NV (Sales tax is 7.75%). I just bought a new $99 iphone from ATT and the sales tax is $44.49 based on a taxable unit value of $574? Is this right? 44% tax? Come on...

I have no problem with 7% Jersey tax...but I wish it was still 6% :(. Damn you Jon Corzine!! Anyway...my 32GB was $337 with tax/fees. Tax was $20.93
