Drobo Mini - loud, no JBOD and you can't boot from it -
Pegasus J4 - as of today - can't boot from it
BM Multidock - is SATA II internal so 350MB/s is the max - per drive. with RAID0 get 700MB/s - only fanless unit.
Pegasus 2 - fastest and most flexible - be careful what drives you use
OyenDigital - some seem to like it
Caldigit T3 - just started shipping - comes only with drives

That's your world today :)

Why did Caldigit ship with TB1 at a time when TB2 is available? Not a bad price for 6TB's though.

Are these all TB2? AFAIK, some are TB1.

Pegasus 2 in UK

Has anyone found a supplier of diskless Pegasus 2 in the UK? Really think this is the solution for my setup but don't want to buy loads of preloaded drives.

Promise Pegasus2 diskless solution

Here is what I found at the Apple Store: The Pegasus2 R4 Diskless System allows existing Mac Pro users upgrading to the newest Mac Pro model to migrate current storage seamlessly. Simply remove your drives from your current Mac Pro and reinstall into the drive trays of the Pegasus2 R4 Diskless system to get instant access to all of your data.

Drobo has a nice thunderbolt system that I am going to get in a few months. After dropping $5800 on a nMP I gotta wait a bit :p

I would NEVER buy lacie again. Former company I worked for had a few hundred of them, and the failure rates on them was ludicrously high.

All of the choises today suck. What´s wrong with the manufacturers?

I just want something like the plug&play Blackmagic Multidock, but with minimum 750MB/s read speeds, but preferably over 1000MB/s read speeds. (And at least two Thunderbolt ports and no fans).

Why can´t anyone make this? Is it technologically impossible?

This is from the LaCie site:

I own one at the moment. It is ridiculously loud! I don´t know what they were thinking.

That´s why I don´t want to buy Lacie anymore.

LaCie reengineered the Little Big Disk to be even more reliable and much quieter than ever, so you can focus on the creative process. Since overheating is the primary cause of hard drive failure, cooling is essential for reliability. The LaCie Little Big Disk’s interior was therefore completely redesigned to improve its heat dissipation system. As a result, the fan is only occasionally necessary. And the fan itself is now much quieter because it is larger and adjusts its speed according to temperature. The net effect of the cooling system is a nearly silent product with a longer lifespan.

Probably have to wait on reviews. ( I know you said 4 drives but you could chain 2 of them if the price is right.)

Well this is very confusing since many SSDs and SSD docks (like the Blackmagic Multidock) don´t have any fans at all.

Their answer: "With regards to RAID storage you would not see the speed benefit of Thunderbolt 2 until you got the larger RAID solutions."

Why did all the HD manufacturers change their names and charge higher prices.

Isn't Lacie and GTech rebranded versions of products from manufacturers with a history of poor reliability?

Well I haven't gotten my nMP but I just got a shipment notification for the Pegasus 2 diskless. I'll know more next week.

as an aside, does anyone know what an acceptable operating temp range is for an SSD? trying to figure out if i can disable some/all fans in an enclosure.

currently running at 26-28C with the fans. i want to pull the fans and monitor the temp but am not quite sure when to stop.

thanks!

I have a similar experience though we found that everytime we thought we had a disk failure it was in fact the power supply. As a result we always had a stock of power supplies to switch out. The reason we didn't ditch the LaCie's was that, power issues aside, we never had a failed disk, no data ever lost (though triple redundant backups anyway). Can't say the same for any of the other drives we had running.

I think the later power supplies were a lot more reliable (I have a stack of Lacie Quadra's at home running 24/7 and they have certainly lasted longer than the older models)

All a moot point as I'll be moving to something like a pegasus or drobo when I get a new MacPro ;-)

Maybe you can explain your use scenario a little more so we can help.

750MB/s - 1000MB/s read?? the FASTEST 2.5" SSD today is 550MB/s. Anything past that is PCIe or RAID. The BM dock does RAID fine with 2 SSDs doing 700MB/s R/W -- sure I WISH it were SATA III but my use doesn't demand 550MB/s - 350MB/s works fine - and I can RAID drives someday if I ever need to. But I am an Audio guy - If you are professional video I can start to see the need for speed :)

Unfortunately the wish list you describe does not exist today.

For raw speed - Pegasus 2 is as good as it gets - today.

The new Lacie Little Big Disk 2 has reads over 1300 MB/s.

The Pegasus J4 has over 750 MB/s.

The Pegasus J2 has up to 750 MB/s.

So what the hell are you talking about man?

You do know that RAID 0 gives you more speed? Enclosures with RAID:ed drives will give you more than 550 MB/s speeds.

We had a wide range of failures from PS, controllers to physical disks. I wouldn't touch them with a 10' pole.

Drobo has been pretty good to me. Although the fans can kick in a little and the USB 2 versions are ... well, a lot slower then I would like. I use it primarily for media storage.

Dude - relax! I am talking about what you are talking about.

EDIT: Except that I just saw you hate RAIDs... you are not understanding the specs for any of these multi-drive enclosures. THey are all quoting speed based on RAID....
-----------------------------

The J4 does 750MB/s with multiple drives in RAID (RAID0 probably). So you do not seem to understand the BM box has four independent SATA II controllers and bays that you can configure anyway you wish. And they scale - 350MB/s each - not all together. So - like I have said in this thread a couple of times-- BM with two bays in RAID0 with SSDs IS 700MB/s. I didn't try 3 in RAID (cause it doesn't matter to me but I see no reason it wouldn't be 1000MB/s.

Also means you can access all four drives at once and pretty much max out the TB1 connection. The aggregate speed is more than a J4 or J2. But for a SINGLE drive if the J4/j2 are SATA III internal they would be faster. If 750MB/s is all they go - then for 2 drives in RAID they are the same.

If you want SPEED - Pegasus V2 with TB2.... or the just announced Lacie - you will love the price and their fan... but still there is no mention yet why is all of this speed so important to you? If its all about the fastest - then the BM dock is a non starter... I am not trying to sell you one!

Now be nice :)
