Hello everyone,
There are two things about the upcoming MacBook Ultra that I'm really curious to see play out: the display position when in touch mode, and whether cellular data will work in clamshell mode. To be more specific:
1. The display / hinge.
A touchscreen can be hugely beneficial in certain workflows, especially ones where precision matters. That's exactly why I don't see how Apple could just bolt touch onto a screen with the same basic mechanical design as the current Air or Pro. Try poking a few things near the top of the screen on today's machines and watch it wobble itself into a blur.
So my expectation is a much sturdier hinge — probably stiffer and harder to adjust — anchored lower on the display. That feels like the most likely option.
But then I saw in the WWDC keynote that you can now draw directly on the Mac in Notes and Freeform, using the same tool/color picker the Apple Pencil has on iPad. That got me thinking about a second, less likely possibility: redesigning the hinge entirely so the display can come forward in drawing mode — closer to the user and able to tilt much further back, similar to some of Microsoft's Surface designs. That would be terrific. A large screen with proper drawing ergonomics and Apple Pencil support would probably be the best possible way to work in Procreate, Shapr3D, and so on.
2. Cellular in clamshell mode.
Beyond the obvious benefit of having 5G on your Mac, I wonder whether there would be any MacBook Ultra-specific macOS functionality built around that always-on connection. For one, I'd love to set up an always-on AI agent in something like Claude Code or Hermes that I could reach from my iPhone whenever I'm away from the machine.
What do you think about either one?
