So simple enough question. I find that Touch ID on my MacBook Pro (2019 13 inch), works flawlessly when I register my prints but a week or 2 afterwards it stops recognising my fingerprints and I need to re-register them.

Anyone else experienced this? I never had this issue back when I had a Touch ID iPhone.

Cheers.

Does it stop working entirely, or only become too fussy?

Had a problem with my phone that it took many tries to unlock, though it took longer than a couple weeks to develop the problem. I guessed it was changes in the appearance of the fingerprints, not in the shapes themselves but in something about how they look to the machine. There are complaints about this from time to time with print recognition across platforms.

It becomes fussier and fussier until it stops working entirely and I have to delete and re-register my prints. Never had this issue at all with any Touch ID enable iPhone in the past. Going to contact apple about it as it doesn't seem like a very common issue.

rather than using the tip of your finger use use an area maybe an inch down and or use your left hand.
the thinking is after doing some physical work your skin is worn scratched.
it dosnt have to be a finger tip, back of our finger works too.
my iPhone does a better job than my MBP.

Just as a redundancy, register your same finger, or more fingers, more than once.

I had actually done that and it still didn't matter. It's now solved though funnily enough.

I registered my thumb, well the side of it so its not an awkward position when unlocking, and I haven't had an issue since. Seems the prints on my fingers are not so trustworthy for whatever reason. I put it down to having played guitar for decades, my fingers have smoothed out a lot and the superficial skin is kind cracked. But yeah, the thumb works perfectly.

And thanks for the advice @jeyf and @Steve686

Oh god. Makes total sense. Callous buildup killed me when I used to play and I couldn’t really feel. Y fingertips for a long time.

I guess Mac FaceID would be the most anticipated feature in an upcoming model.
