Just drove over an hour today to pick up my new iPhone 6 from the Apple store. I unboxed it in the parking lot so I would have a phone for the ride home and the touch id wasn't working during setup. Figured it was just a problem with the original OS 8 version.

Came home and did a restore from backup in itunes and an update to iOS 8.0.2 and touch id is still not working. It scans part of my finger (if it will even go that far) and stops. It keeps telling me to completely cover the home button, which I am.

Tried to enter my finger on my girlfriend's same model phone and it worked flawlessly and quick. Recognized my finger right away.

I really hope this isn't a hardware issue. I've spent the last weeks stalking stores and driving around the state just trying to get my hands on one of these to begin with and I got the last one at the store I was at today.

I've tried cleaning it off with my super soft t-shirt, I've rebooted and resynced the phone several times, still nothing. Any other suggestions?

Weird. Short of trying another complete restore, I can't think of anything else.

If it is a hardware issue, I would definitely take it to the Apple Store.

Is it just lagging in picking up the print?

Hmm... you should of taken it back to the store instead of driving back. Shame you live such a ways away. :/ I have the same problem with the distance, my nearest Apple store is in Southampton and that's about 50 minutes away.

My closest Apple store is about 15 minutes away but they have been out of stock all weekend. As has the other Apple store that is 25 minutes away and the third one in this city that is 25 mintues away.

Total are 5 apple stores in a 1.5 hour distance from me and they have all been out of stock except for the one I went to today, which is the furthest one away.

I drove an hour on Friday night to another store to get one and they were out by the time I got there. Then I spent over three hours yesterday stalking my closest store hoping they would get one in, but they never did. So this afternoon I decided to make the longest trek to the store that did say they had them in and I got one, but now the home button is not scanning my finger so I can put in my finger print.

I literally want to pull my hair out at this point. The universe does not seem to want me to have one of these phones. I've been fighting tooth and nail to get one to begin with and now this?

If it is a hardware problem, which it must be, then I'm going to have to spend even more time now jumping through hoops trying to locate a store that has one in stock to replace this one with.

Coming from a 5C this was one of the features I was most excited about too, considering I use a long passcode for my phone.

If you make a Genius Bar appointment, they have new phones set aside for swaps, so don't worry about that.

Or call Apple. They will send a replacement in 2 days. You just need to put a hold on your CC for the value of the phone but you will save time and gas if that matters to you.

Awesome! Took it into the Apple store today and they swapped it out right on the spot.
