Press the Home button and let it come back up while leaving the finger on it works on the 5s with iOS8 and Touch ID enabled. I suspect the 6 should work the same.

hi, sorry, should have stated that wanted to see if it can be done without actually pressing it, just touching it

I doubt you can right know, but maybe a future update will make it possible.
Tapping the ring only works for reachibility, I think.

not without a jailbreak. That would be a great feature and help extend the button life, which is why I want it, and why apple wants it to break.

But it would kill your battery life and longevity. More power usage = More charges. More charges = shorter battery longevity.

This is true, same as the jailbreak option to tap the screen to wait. I don't know which would use less energy, but I would guess the sensor.
