I just took delivery of my M1 MacBook Air. I am not able to use TouchID for App Store purchases. In System Preferences > TouchID, the option to use TouchID for the App Store is selected. When I make a purchase in the App Store, I am asked to enter my password. After that, I am asked if I want to use TouchID to make purchases in the future. I select "OK". Then I get a message that says:

"There was a problem setting up biometric authentication on this device. Try again later."

I've tried deleting the fingerprint and adding it back. This didn't work.

Anyone else experiencing this?

That doesn’t sound good. It sounds similar to people who have had a hardware problem with their phone. Hopefully, it is just a software bug. I haven’t read of anyone else having this problem on the forum. Maybe someone else has.

To be clear, TouchID is working in other apps, i.e. with 1Password, in Safari, etc. The only place it isn't working (as far as I can tell now) is with App Store purchases. I've also tried restarting the MBA twice, to no avail.

Seems to be bug.

And I cannot delete the apps I downloaded....

Edit: I restarted the computer and I was able to remove them.

Are all of you running 11.0.1? I just got the computer yesterday and haven't had a chance to upgrade. Hoping that might fix it?

I registered an account to reply to this. I'm encountering the exactly same issues with my MacBook Air M1 delivered on Saturday, Nov 28. TouchID works anywhere else but the App Store, I have to punch in my password every time I download an app

It started working for me!
I did software update last night. I wonder if that fixed it.

Ditto. It's a bug, I reported, but doesn't hurt for others to report.

Cmd + Space - Type Feedback and select Feedback Assistant.

Does your Apple Pay not work as well? Like buying something through a website?

I did the 11.0.1 update. This time, after I downloaded an app on the App Store, and I was asked if I wanted to use TouchID, I didn't get the error message. I've yet to make another purchase or download, so I'm not yet certain it's working, but the previous times I said "yes" to the prompt to use TouchID I got that error message, so I'm encouraged.

That's a negative. M1 MacBook Pro 13". Running macOS 11.1.

Just bought an album on the iTunes Store. This is the second time I've done this; both times, had to type a password. Touch ID not offered. All boxes are checked. Still not working.

Same kind of issue here, I think. M1 MBA running 11.1. Touch ID seems to work everywhere but for iTunes Store purchases, despite all the appropriate settings being checked. However, I don't get the "problem setting up biometric authentication on this device" error. I simply get asked for my password every single time I go to buy something (even seconds after buying something else in the same iTunes Store).

I've tried toggling any settings that seem related to the issue, removing and re-adding cards to Wallet, and I've just signed out of iCloud and signed back in again.

I should add that I haven't needed anything from the App Store, so my issue could be isolated to the iTunes Store for all I know.

This perfectly describes the steps taken and results for me as well. I have not purchased anything from the Mac App Store either to know if it works there or not. Now I'm starting to wonder if if this might be just an iTunes Store issue.

Has anyone found a way to fix this issue? my touch id works perfectly fine and it just won't ask it on the app store. All boxes are checked in settings, it just keeps asking for password.
