With all the buzz about the possible unconfirmed loss of Touch ID, was thinking... given that face recognition is a possibility, that camera has to be pretty high resolution/high quality (maybe paired with infared sensor like the Kinect for depth), is it likely for TouchID to work without having to physically touch the screen, but instead holding your finger in front of the camera? Or maybe putting your finger on top of the hole where the camera is, and have it "focus" macro style on your finger to determine whether your print matches?

I think of it as analogous to projectors where back then you have long throw projectors where you have to put the projector far away from the display. Though nowadays there are short throw projectors where you put the projector very close to the wall and it projects a big image...

Could the reverse be possible where there is a "short scanner" with the lens of the iPhone camera to look at your fingerprint using purely optics and authenticate you without needing a physical fingerprint sensor?

I'd been wondering this the whole time. My guess was it wasn't technically possible which is why no one was talking about it. Just seemed kind of obvious to me.

Even if it could work theoretically, I don't think that the facial recognition hardware or software is optimized for distinguishing finger prints, so I doubt it would be as reliable/secure as the traditional tactile TouchID.

The sensors used on the new iPhone for FaceID could be capable of scanning fingerprints without any contact. I researched current contactless fingerprint scanners and posted this a while ago, I’m excited about the new sensors and what they can do.

Contactless fingerprints plus biometrics will be much better and more secure than TouchID. The sensors could detect multiple prints at once, 3D, and also map blood vessels making it extremely hard to spoof. And water on your fingerprints are not an issue with these sensors.

If they had difficulty getting banks on board with FaceID, fingerprints could still be an option without even touching the lens, just hold your hand a few inches from your phone.

I think fingerprints as security will go away, actually it’s whats under your skin that the sensors can see will be more secure and harder to spoof.

Near infrared LED sensors are pretty cool, and of course lasers are cool.

Wow....I had no idea the sensors would be capable of this level of operation!! Exciting to see what happens next week
