Okay so. I plan to build a multitouch table as close as I can to Microsoft's but within the $500 budget. Some people call it impossible. I say it isn't. I'm ebaying it all the way with my parts I use. It's going to use rear DI (diffused illumination) like Surface uses. So I will keep this thread updated as the project goes on. Also right now this is what it should look like.. but bigger.

Best of luck. You might try Googling around because there are quite a few tutorials out there for multitouch tables. Perhaps they'll give you some ideas?

By the way, it seems to me the cheapest way to go about doing it would be to use a webcam to track finger movements, which has been done many times. I'll be interested to see your progress, though.

No the NUI (Natural User Interface) community has me covered. Also the reason I managed to get by without an expensive cost was that the projector was made in 1996 when system 7 was the main os. ;) Regardless. This thing still packs a punch. I love it!

You're making it sound as if you already have it made?

Best of luck to you!

Though I really don't see how you can do it for only $500...

It's not that hard, I built a fully working one for around £13 (although there's no projector...yet). It works surprisingly well, although not as well as the Surface.

See? And there you go.

Are you going to use glass or acrylic for the surface (I'm assuming you're using the FTIR technique like me because it's the easiest)? I've had good luck with glass on the prototype but I think I'm going to have to go with acrylic on the real thing.

I am using glass for the REAR DI. It's custom fit from my local glass store. :) Also I'm using the rear di method... not ftir. It will just take awhile to perfect the IR light. This touchtable will be used in the dark for the best result.

What are you going to use to run it, a small mac mini, or a hackintosh to keep costs low, or run it of an external computer?

I like seeing these self builds, makes me wonder what to do with a broken G3 ibook.

Best of luck :)

Your initial picture of what it will look like is interesting. But I have to be honest, I'm not sure what it's meant to do. What exactly is a multi-touch table?

Okay I'll finish cutting the table tommorow. Also planning to mod my camera to be infrared... and mount the projector... and get the glass.. and the mirror. I hope I can do all that in one day. :D

I got my iSight for free. :D Anyways. Check out my framework:

You can tell this is gonna be good just from the framework.
