Did you explain to them that after 8 years they’ll have to buy a subscription to continue service? Or whomever they sell the vehicle to will be on the hook for a subscription?
Yeah, that’s one of the parts of me saying “GM has the right to do, but it may impact sales for them to a degree”. Monetization by auto manufacturers is not something I am a fan of in the least, but GM is not the only one doing it, and a lot of changes can happen in eight years time. It’s too early to tell how things will change as the auto industry is in a really weird place right now, and not just for GM.

GM is not obligated to give anyone a reason for not using CarPlay, though they did explain why.

I don't think GM —or any automobile manufacturer —is worried about Apple fanboys not buying their products because they don't support CarPlay. GM will have its own version that works with Apple phones. Apple needs to be certain its devices work with GM cars, not the other way around. The same goes for the various versions of Android; those companies will need to ensure their devices interface with the automobile.
Sure, they just said good bye to those of us who wanted a choice.
The smartphone market is pretty much a duopoly right now, but the auto market is definitely not.
If GM doesn't want to play ball, there are other manufacturers who are willing to.
To rub it in, the Honda and Acura rebadge GM vehicles offer said feature.

I am hoping this will apply to the 2026 Subaru Solterra as well which we just ordered. The Solterra and BZ are essentially the same car and it uses the Toyota software. There is otherwise no built in EV route planning which is a strange omission.

I don’t know why Apple limits CarPlay to this feature for only specific brands. I know they want the additional details to assist, but I still have an EV and want to plan trips with charging stations.

That was my first thought, too. Isn't "Battery Electric" a bit redundant (in the context of vehicles)?
Glad I wasn't the only one. Thanks to the replies I now understand now that it's a term to clarify the specific type of electric vehicle. it seems EV has become an umbrella term for anything with at least a battery powered motor, whereas I used to use it for the 'exclusively' battery type.

The choice not to allow the owner to project Apple CarPlay or Android Auto at all on vehicles equipped with Google Built-In is certainly GM’s right, but it can and will impact sales to a degree. Whether it is a large or small degree remains to be seen. Most users can easily replicate their experience by downloading Google equivalent apps from the Play Store directly to their vehicles, so it’s really a matter of end user education and individual adeptness at technology. I have had a couple of customers who were very disappointed that CarPlay projection was not supported at all, but I ultimately was able to educate them on how they weren’t really missing features, but had to create new muscle memory to invoke the Google Assistant and use Google Maps instead of Apple Maps. There are other issues that are more serious that I am experimenting with finding ways around to make it easier to cope with losing Apple CarPlay.
I recently drove a Cadillac EV and have decided to pass. I can get by no full CarPlay integration however purposely restricting an Apple Music app is a bit much.

I rent a lot of cars. No carplay = no rental for me. The DIY infotainment systems are universally terrible, from GM to mercedes.

Here’s a further clarification that no one has asked for, but it helps explain the BEV/EV terminology.

“EV” in popular culture is “electric vehicle”, which implies it’s an all-electric vehicle like a Tesla.

“EV” as used by many companies (and some regulations) also stands for “electrified vehicle” which is any vehicle which uses an electric motor in its powertrain to accomplish reduced emissions. A gas-powered 2005 Prius is an EV by this definition.

The two subtly different initialisms for EV means that sometimes they can be used interchangeably, but other times it leads to confusion.

(It’s similar to how “AI” standing for both “Artificial Intelligence” and “Apple Intelligence” can sometimes be used interchangeably, but sometimes leads to confusion.)

Have you tried A Better Route Planner? It also can sync to your car to show real time SOC.

This is what I use.

It's fantastic and offers the kind of nerd level customization and options that I doubt anything else would satisfy me on.

If one is serious about this sort of thing, ABRP (or something like it) is where it's at.
