As to whether people choose a vehicle for CarPlay - people are thinking of this the wrong way. Someone isn't going to drop $30K on a certain car only because it has CarPlay. That would be kind of ridiculous. People often shop for different vehicles in the same class (the classic Honda Accord vs Toyota Camry is a good example). In this case, when two vehicles are similar then a feature as simple as CarPlay can be a deciding factor in picking one vehicle over another. At least until such time as every car supports it.

Agreed, I just change my car a few weeks ago, within the budget I had, pretty much everything was a similar size/performance MPG etc, so it was the 'toys' that made the final decision for me.

Maybe this is true for most iPhone users, but not me.

I think that CP is overrated. I have used it since 2015, and having CarPlay as an option would have little influence over my next car purchase.

If CP ever allowed Waze support, then I might raise the priority of it a little.

I definitely don't disagree. It would never be a consideration for me, but I'm the person who purchases a car for very specific reasons related to performance. People who are in the Apple ecosystem for the congruity and would choose between a Honda accord or Toyota Camry who are deciding based on more trivial matters might though.

Honestly I've never met anyone who mentioned CarPlay as an important feature in their next car purchase. People have much bigger determining factors in buying a car, and in my experience very few people use CarPlay or Android Auto anyway. I think they're both vastly overrated in forums like this. Yeah, Toyota's EnTune is terrible, but the average driver doesn't care as long as the FM radio works and, possibly, they can link audio over BT.

I think there is an important passive preference behind it. I agree with most of what you said, but I still think that people don't want to have to mess with their phone's while driving, and otherwise will. Car manufacturer's interfaces are not good enough to integrate services in a satisfactory enough manner. I for instance have GPS in my car, and the interface is fine; even though the car GPS has traffic data, the map routing and suggestions just can't match Google Maps which I use on my phone. I deal with mostly terrible traffic every day, and use maps every day to find the best route based on live traffic, before heading to work or home. This is simply not optimal with the car GPS, and so instead I have to use my phone for GPS every day. (and it's both the general route, and smaller differences in exit preference and certain turns)

It's less about how bad the car interfaces are (for some manufactures anyway), and more about how good google maps and apple apps are.

I agree. I have a 2012 Prius, and I prefer its dash. However, CarPlay would be nice. My Prius I runs like a champ, so I'm not that interested in upgrading yet. Probably going to get an oil change next week at the dealership near me, so maybe I'll ask around and see what that they plan for the 2019 Prius.

I was in the same boat as you. My 2005 Prius that I bought new was at 185k miles and counting- and literally EVERYTHING still ran and worked like a champ. With dealer cash back incentives and truecar pricing we decided we pretty much had to upgrade- literally about 7k off sticker price and then hopefully the 4K or so cash back tax credit later on. Upgraded to the Prius prime premium for lessa than I paid for my 05 Prius. Was the right move- I’m loving this new plug in!

I’ll miss that 05 though- I really wanted to see how many miles over 200k I could get.

I don’t get what the big deal is here. I mean Ford is putting car play in Ford Fiestas here in the US...in fact they have it standard in every single 2018 vehicle equipped with their Sync3 infotainment, which is available in every model of the lineup. Simultaneously, brands like BMW are dragging their feet and planning on gauging the customer with a subscription model to gain access to CarPlay in vehicle that cost 2-3x the comparable Ford model. It is a very weird dynamic.

Well, you have now. A year and half ago when I was shopping a new car I rejected pretty much out of hand the brand of car I'd been driving happily for 15 years because they didn't support CarPlay in their current models, and couldn't or wouldn't tell if or when they would. I keep my cars for a long time and didn't want to get stuck with one for decade or more that would never integrate with my mobile device. I deliberately bought one that did. The fact that one of the more resistant holdouts (Toyota) has caved tells me I am not the only asking about and expecting this feature.

Prime is really a sweet car. For me, my Prius is too new to upgrade since the saving on it being more electric won't actually save me any money given I fully own my car.

I like Apple maps on my Apple car play, and no issues at all. More reliable then the GPS that came with my vehicle.

We've used Apple maps on multiple trips and its always worked great. Apple Car Play is nice but not a deal breaker from our own "experience" not other's opinions.
