Hey Macloversss,
I recently had my laptop stolen , and was wondering if there's a way to trace my laptops ip address as it connects to the internet. I can see my laptop being online through Skype. I have had my drop-box shared folders setup with my brother's laptop , I can easily transfer files to my own computer.

if it helps , my laptop was running the latest mac os x , and is connected to the internet some time on during the day.

I am planning to drop a file in my Drop-box and find the IP as the transfer starts . How do I find that ip address? is such thing possible? is there a file that would allow me to remote desktop with my laptop? what are your suggestions?

No. You should deal with the police and let them handle it. Knowing the IP address is useless to you unless you can link it to a physical location, for which you will need a court order to get anyways.

Exactly. Even knowing the IP address only narrows it down to a hub most times to which hundreds of users can be connected. You will need to police to subpoena Dropbox for the IP address information. Then with that info they can goto the ISP responsible for that IP and subpoena the account holder's name from them. I use to process such requests for a large cable company years ago. Thats all information what they won't turn over without the proper request so the police are the way to go.
