I don't use anything between my display and keyboard - I don't get any marks or any issues. My computer is 2.5 years old at this stage as well.
So suppose if there's dust on your screen do you clean it everytime before closing the lid, that might be tedious! If not the particles can scratch while the lid is closed.

The paper that is used during shipping is definitely not foam. It is in fact tissue paper.

Maybe for the 13", but it is definitely a thin foam sheet for the 15". I still have mine. Maybe check the box your mac came in if you still have it.
I do have mine but as I said it's about to tear. I don't think it's tissue paper, look like some sort of tracing paper.

I use the black sheet felt type overlay they have in the new HP probooks I setup for Windows clients for when I have to lug my MBP about a lot with the lid shut. I have no idea where you buy them from but I come across a couple a week :D

I don't clean my screen very often and never had a problem, in fact I don't ever recall having issues with dust/scratches or the need of the radtech product. I tried it once back in the Powerbook days but found it useless.

tl;dr, I don't worry about such things, never had an issue in the years of using a laptop

Mine was tissue paper. It looks like tracing paper, But it is a lot thinner and transparent. It does not last too long.

i went and purchased this cloth for 1$ its pretty soft and i can use it to wipe my screen, keyboard and the computer itself. You guys should get one too.
