I wonder does anyone know if there is either an app, or the Apple Watch has a "Track Back" feature, so for instance, if I go camping, (which I often do), and decide to go "over that hill yonder", and get sidetracked, and explore, is there a way that my watch can tell me that "camp is that way"? Most "Sport Watches" have a feature that they will point to the waypoint, but I can't find anything like that on the AW.

I downloaded Ana app a while ago called something like big arrow that does that. I’ve never actually used it though so I can’t say how well it works.

Many thanks for suggesting WorkOutDoors.

There are several features in the app that help to track back to the start. When you start a workout it places a green circle on the map to mark the starting position. After that it draws a breadcrumb trail of your route, which also helps guide your way back.

It also shows a green "start compass" which points in the direction of the starting position (as opposed to the red compass which points North). If you tap the green compass then it shows a message with the distance back to the start and also the direction to head.

This screenshot shows what I mean, with the start icon, the start compass, and the message all highlighted in red:
