Hi all

I was thinking about trading in my iMac for a new M1 2021 version.

Given that they are now quoting end Aug/ early Sep for the delivery of the new machine... how does the trade in work?

Would I be expected to trade in the old machine immediately (or within say 14 days) and then be without an iMac until the new one arrives?

This seems less that ideal given that one replaces another.

Anyone experienced this?

Apple will ship your box to return you old Mac at around the same time when the new one actually ships, so you have ~ 2 weeks after receiving your new one to return your old one ... just traded in my MBP for a M1 MBA a month ago

Thank you...

But is your trade in price locked in from the time you order.... regardless of how long they take to fulfil?

for me it was, I had to wait ~ 2 weeks for my new MBA ... and I would be shocked if Apple would not hold to their word when they give you a trade-in value knowing that if might take a month to get their new product. Exception of course being that your trade-in does not have a discrepancy to what you say when you filled out the trade-in form, eg say you did not disclose a scratch or something like that.
There have been multiple reports here on MR that people did not get the trade-in value they expected, my personal experience is that I have always gotten what I was quoted and besides the MBP I traded in a couple iPhones and a watch ...

Thanks for the info.

So in summary.. if I order now.. and trade in my iMac, then I will not be required to take the old iMac in until after the new one arrives even if that's 6 weeks in the future... and ill still get the quoted amount.

Thanks for the info.

that has been my experience, you can always contact Apple and confirm that if you have any doubts ...

That's how it should work. Do the trade in at the store if possible. As the company they use for mail in trades ins is infamous for knocking down the price. At times by ridiculous amounts. If you trade in at the store. You get your money and it's all over with.

THIS.

In my experience, if you can get to an apple store do the trade there. If you can't, and can work around it, initiate a standalone trade so that it goes directly to apple for the trade, get your gift card and then order the new machine.

I got burned once by phobia on a MBP trade where they quoted 1000 and cut $400 off by saying that the machine was locked, even though I know better.

At that point I was two weeks into the new MBP and just chalked it up to stupidity on my part by not following the steps I outlined above.

Apple desribes the trade-in program here: Apple Trade In

I did that when purchasing my 24" M1 iMac. I received the shipping box the day after my new iMac arrived. Shipped it out the next day and after inspection got the full quoted amount. Since I opted for trade-in when ordering my new iMac the estimated amount was deducted from my balance immediately.I was usng my Apple Card so the balance due on the new machine was net of the trade-in amount.

Apple makes this process very simple and easy.

Thanks all for the replies.

Stupidly I spent a few days contemplating what to do... meaning to place the order Sunday. i didnt.
Now, the offer is down by £60! Stunned its dropped so much so quickly. £60 less makes the whole thing less attractive to change over.

In peoples experience here... is the a blip and might it got back up? Or is it forever destined to such ever more lower as the days go by?

Apple can lower the price whenever they want, so the consumer usually gets pretty screwed out of a deal. Losing that much wouldn’t make it worth it to me personally.

Agreed. It went from being a fine line of a 'reasonable' deal... to 'no deal' overnight.

Id not have thought to use Apple trade in but this original price was "ok" to me.... however now it isn't. As I say.. wondering if its liable to go back up or whether I trade in elsewhere and get a decent price again.

Im not sure how they come to the conclusion my machine is worth £60 less today than it was yesterday when theres no new hardware come out etc thats affected its value adversely. Strange.

I would simply call Apple and say “hey, why did you remove x amount from my trade in when yesterday it was fine? Will your honor the original trade in value? Otherwise I will trade it in elsewhere.” Not sure what your country has as far as selling, Facebook marketplace is a good one.

As I didnt commit to the order then i dont have a leg to stand on.

Yes, there are other trade in places available in the UK such as CEX - but in this particular case especially as I could keep the Keyboard and Mouse..... the apple one was the most attractive... (until today). Lesson learned I suppose.
