Can I? My MBP is completely dead, can't boot or chime whatsoever! DO I need to take out the HD to tranfer data?

Plug it into another mac with firewire while holding T: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1661

you clearly can't read. OP states the device won't even start, let alone boot. So if device = dead battery, dead mainboard or other dead situation, it's impossible to boot into target disk mode.

solution is either HDD removal and placement in external enclosure or other system capable of taking two drives, one of them being a laptop sized SATA drive.

Whoops. You are correct, I had some trouble reading that.
