I have a few applications that are large in size, and where I'm at, the Wi-Fi and ethernet speeds suck. Is there a way for me to transfer some App purchases like FCP X from my 2012 MacBook Pro to my rMBPro using an external hard drive.

Some Mac apps are fully self contained and can just be dragged over to a new install, but many like FCP are not and the installer installs a bunch of support files etc. Unless you had some way of figuring out where every single one of those support files was, a drag/drop move is not going to work.
